i am trying to buy more ram for my completely and horribly stock dell dimension xps t800r. it was a hand-me-down, i have a very low budget and i am just trying to make do until i would eventually like to just build my own (which at that point i will be right back here trying to figure out what is compatable with what). i have two sticks right now; one 128 and one 256 both pc100 168pin. i did a little research and i found out that this dell can hold up to 768mb of ram. i believe i need sdram but i have no idea. any help would be much appreciated. thank you.
have you looked inside the computer to see the ram sockets & how many are there as i think 3. what windows are you using & what are you using the computer for? how big is your hd & how much space is left on it?
hey ddp - thanks for your reply. i think you helped me before when my ram crapped out on me. thank you very much btw, i used an eraser on the one stick and i am still using it. there are 3 sockets. i'm using windows xp pro. i am using the comp for music, movies, tv shows, file conversions, cd and dvd burning, and would also like to start playing a little wc3. my c drive is 29gb with 22 left. i also have an internal 160gb seagate (really i think it is like 140 or 150) and i have 70gb left on that (even more when i clean off some of the crap i'm never going to use)
so you need 2 more 256meg sdram to replace the 128meg to get 768meg. the empty ram socket should have 2 bumps in it. 1 close to center & the 2nd close to 1 end. that means it uses sdram because if 1 bump near the center than is ddr ram. can use either pc100 or pc133 ram which will run as pc100 because of the original pc100 256meg.
ok thanks. should i go after a good name brand or would generic be the best idea. i'm not really sure on the quality/value difference. i'm looking at pricewatch.com and there are some pretty cheap sticks. just wondering if that would just end up biting me in the a$$.
stay away from infinion ram as had prblems with them as 64 & 128meg version. they were picky on what motherboards they would work with.
oh and one other question if you don't mind...what the hell is 16Mx8. that is printed on one of the sticks. on pricewatch i noticed that all of the sticks had something similar to this in the description. does this need to match up or no? tia
