It costs money but ULEAD dvd factory 4 and Nero 6 Ultra Edition work excellent.

If you aren't a total noob you can use virtual dub, which works well for me with any and all codecs i have installed on my machine. Premiere is great for the actual creation of movies (titles, scene changes, music, etc.) but its best to give it a format it likes and not have it change stuff itself (it can go a little crazy when doing that). Sony Vegas lags far behind Premiere in effects, but is much better for encoding and reading video to and from multiple formats but can have trouble with audio of formats like xvid, and even vob sometimes. All in all, video editing and encoding is a total pain in the ass, but when you look into it you realize how difficult it is to make a program to do just one of the tasks neccesary, let alone all of them.

Please give more info as to what type of editing you are trying to do (i.e. create your own movie out of multiple formats, re-encode/compress)

Note: Movie Maker can read a surprising number of formats for a freeware editor, but where it sucks is re-encoding the video as it will only put it in windows movie format (and maybe dv-avi i cant remember and am on mac right now :) )

    Cheer m8's for the info.
The type of editing I want to do is:- downloading any type of video clips in any formats but most .avi and after I'd like to edit them to remove scenes such as advertising ecc. Also I wish to make my own compilation from various vid clips.
    Thanks for the help.
