my game, for some strange reason, keeps freezing up at one specific point in the game. it does not have any scratches at all. i have a no cd patch as my exe. also i keep on getting this critical error message that says general protection fault. woulld all of this be because of the patch

Could you maybe tell us what game it is? A member might know of a known issue with "a game" and be able to help you. Worst case scenario, you may have a game defect. It happens. When I purchased Madden 2005 and played through a Franchise, I could never get past my third year. The game would always freeze in between the seasons 3 and 4. Just a thought.
