Im looking to buy a dvd-rom drive to use strictly for ripping DVD movies onto my computer. I was wondering what drive or drives are the fastest with either stock or modified firmware installed. I was looking at a Sony drive and might go with that but any input whould be great.

Just read a previous thread saying the Lite On 16P9S is the fastest. Will probably go with that. Cant go wrong for $20 on new egg!

Plextor or liteon ROMs are pretty good. I have a 16P9S, many here say it is quick, my PX-116A is LOADS quicker, 10-15mins quicker. Needless to say my 16P9S is now redundant. I now have a LiteOn 167T, that is the quickest of my 3 ROMs.
I hope I haven't depressed you too much. Just remember, there are no guarantees with this burning lark, you have to learn through trial & error!

adamryer i agree with you the liteon Lite On 16P9S is quick i had one and love it but i now have the one that has smart ripper tech If it has trouble reading the disc the laser pivots it is just as quick as my 16p9s dam im at work right now i will try and post model later today it is a combo drive it will also burn reg cd's this thing is made to rip i love it.I agree with pulsar the 167t is the really nice my friend has it but i dont think it has smart ripper tech not positive.I think for the bang for the buck your right the 16p9s is a good choice...

But like I said, the 16P9S is SO much slower than the 167T or the PX-116A. I have had nothing but success with my old liteon & Plextor. You tell me why, 'cos I am sure that I do not know!

The 16P9S with the official LiteOn firmware is one of the slowest drives around. The 16P9S with modified firmware holds the title of fastest DVD-ROM. Big difference. Know what you're doing.

    hello fellow afterdawners,

to make a long story short my lite on 16p9s rips super fast. the file comes with update and stock firmware. oh yeah directions how to do it..( i never flashed my pc drive b4) dont think ill ever go back to stock either(hehehhe). disabled my smart x also. (is suggested)
the thing i like is able to go back and change read speeds on the drive, so everyone can tweak their dvd rom to their machine capabilites.
    thanx for the 411

just installed my new lite-on 16p9s and flashed it with the modded firmware. It rips dvds with shrink about double the speeds of what my nec 3520a does, and i have riplock removed on the nec! This drive is fricken awsome and its only $20!

I flashed my 16P9S, it sent my PC completely nuts, took forever to boot up, sees the ROM as a local drive & my Piodata as a piodada!
Had to take it out & re-install my 167T. Flashed the 167T, seems to rip a bit quicker!
    What the hell happened?

This is exactly the topic i was looking for. If i were to buy a 16P9S could it read all formats of cd and dvd. And where would i get the lastest firmware with it. Or is it better just to keep the firmware the comes with it? Please help, thanks.

Thanks for responding. I downloaded LiteOn SOHD-16P9S
    • FS07/FS09 - user-selectable DVD read speeds (includes stock version)
Now I downloaded that. I got 2 folders. One was FS07-old and the other is FS09. The FS09 folder has a pather and stock. Do I just install the patcher? And what settings should I chose?

hmmm i hope this helps with your situation..
so you have three icons showing stock, modded, and i guess the patcher (.exe file). <fs09>
1st you want to click the little windows file.
from there you can choose your read speeds for the different type of media avail.
then the last ? is you want to disable your Smart-X <y or n>....
    i did for my system
after you hit enter from that ? it applies your selection<s>
from there just double click the "patched f/w" icon and the computer
does the rest.. restart... oh yeah, i just had to apply the region setting for my drive when i activated shrink again..

as far as speed settings its all up to you... everyone has a different set up but when you go through the settings it always shows you the default of the drive..

some users say to fast may be too loud. i cant really notice because of my case fans. but i also experimented with the speeds... hope this helps............................... X

After reading this thread, I bought a Liteon 16P9S and flashed with the patcher. I disabled the smart-x fuction and left all other settings at default. Have now got speeds of over 8000 KB/s encoding with Shrink and have managed to get to over 9900 KB/s on one film. Seriously pleased with the performance! Thanks for the info.

I bought a LiteOn 16P9S last night, went through the steps as far as downloading the modded firmware, etc... I tried using DVDShrink and got speeds of about 3700 kb/s which was taking about 45 minutes. I've read that much faster speeds are possible, and that it should be taking only 15-20 minutes. The only thing I can think of is that I never chose a region code, could that make a diference?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
