Just purchased a Sony DRU800A Double Dual Layer DVD±RW Writer online at the FutureShop for a really decent price. Nero 6.6 comes with the dvd writer can I use this software to rip dvds or do I have to purchase software specificly for this purpose. I'm new at this so i'm kinda ignorant cause i feel this might be a stupid question.

You do need DVD Decrypter to rip your files, however if your files are too big you will need to encode and compress. For this you will need to use Nero Recode2.

You will at some point run into movies that Shrink can't handle. Development and updates stopped over a year ago. Decrypter is no longer being updated either although it works most of the time.

DVDFab Decrypter is currently up to date and free. You would use this program first then use Shrink in the "Open Files" mode to compress and start the burn process.

My method of choice currently is AnyDVD along with Nero Recode2.
