    I'm only mildly knowledgeable about computers, so please speak very plain, simple english. As if you were explaining this to your mother or grandmother =D

    I saved the log for the latest attempt at burning a data DVD and here it is. I'm using ... umm... unknown dvds (friends bf bought them to get anime off me)

    @binka -

    - Need to know if this laptop is a Sony or an NEC, and did the burner come with the laptop ?. I need to know this as the firmware is out of date and i need to make sure to recommend the correct one. (Firmware is what teaches your drive about media/newer media/burn speeds and if it's out of date it can't do it's job properly).

    - those are subpar quality discs. you need to buy better qulaity blank discs. For instance i recommend Verbatim [bold]datalifeplus[/bold]

    - we need to get that firmware up to date and feed it better quality discs. you can keep trying to use those discs after the firmware's updated, but will probably have sporadic success due to the discs being poor quality

    To Creaky

    The laptop is a Toshiba (M40 K009), and the DVD burner came with it.

    I kinda figured the DVDs were substandard. Oh well, I didnĀ“t buy them =D!!!

    And thanks a LOT for helping me with this problem!

    oh. the links i've found for newer firmware are only listed to work with burners shipped with Sony or NEC laptops..

    All i can think of for now is can you temporarily eject the burner itself to look for more info on the drive itself

    *peeks in,

    Actually dvdinfopro will show what type of burner it is along with the firmware. I was having the same issue with updating frmware for my generic laptop burner and got the info from the above mentioned program. You can find the program at www.dvdinfopro.com
