HI All Have just taken delivery of the Liteon 5006, and was particularly excited as I wanted to copy my old VHS tapes onto DVD's and then clear up some house space! Have installed the latest Firmware from Liteon's site successfully, then tried to apply Mr Wizard's hack to remove Macrovision unsucessfully. We have tried to install it to the dvd player several times, but when trying to record from VHS to dvd, message at top of screen says "protected content." We can record from the satellite ok, it plays all region discs and the LP3 is ok, but hope someone can help us to sort out this annoying problem with the Macrovision removal. We have searched various other Forums, and think that the problem may be that we have downloaded a newer version of Firmware than Hack??? Can anyone help??? Hope to hear from someone soon, Many thanks, Bunches xxx
Try this link .. http://ncc2315.com/ilo/ What I do to defeat Macrovision on my LVW-5005s is start the recorder first and let it record for 10 seconds or so .. then I start the source (either VCR or DVD player) This has always worked for me as I am hesitant to hack my machines while they're under warranty (one year from LiteOn)
Wow! Thanks for the super quick reply, Catfreak! Have tried sneaking up on it a couple of times, as per your suggestion, but the crafty machine manages to record for a few seconds, then says 'stopping' and 'protected content'. Pants!! Technology is far too intelligent for my liking - hope it can't read my mind too?!? Any more suggestions?? Regards Bunches xxx
Can understand catfreek position. Based on what you say I don't think you have any [Reasonable] choice than the hack. I have the ilo unit made by LiteOn with hack and it works very well. The site given by catfreek is the place to go. Check and follow the instructions given by Gtrman/Guitarman on this site and forum, also http://www.techolio.com/forums/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=951 http://www.techolio.com/forums/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=951
Should say that the instructions are for the ilo and the firmware for the ilo is different, the methods are basically the same. The firmware and instructions are at the site given by catfreek
It all depends on where you live ... The LVW-5005 is the USofA model, while the LVW-5006 is for the UK consumers ... LiteOn now has a model LVW-5005x which allows 3 hour recording in addition to the LVW-5005 1,2,4 and 6 speeds ... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16882101308&ATT=DVD+Recorder&CMP=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r
The latest firmware (101) from LiteOn is NOT MV hackable. Lite-On has apparently changed the hex string that enables/disables MV. You have to revert to 0098 (previous firmware version) and hack that. This has been discussed on many of the forums.
[JimLely] Correct, there is a problem with the latest LiteON firmware as it relates to any hack. I think that you will find that this is LiteOn first responce to media perssure.
[JimLely] Correct, but this does not mean that the LiteON cannot be hacked. I believe you indicated that. I feel that this is LIteOn first responce to media pressure. Changing the Hex string does not make this firmware un-hackable. This issue you bring up shows that any user should resesrch any recorder used for a specific purpose. You indicate the LiteOn site for firmware. The firmware with hack and instructions is avalable at this site, http://www.ncc2215.com/ilo/ For info goto http://www.techolio.com/forums/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=438&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=80 check the last posts. Guitarman is well versed on this and other subjects
Thanks for all your replies guys - I think that I understood what you were all saying (after reading the posts about 10 times - I am sooooooooooo not technically minded!) I guess the upshot is that at the mo', I can't do anything about taking the Macro filter off. Do you think that it is likely that someone will publish a hack that works with this upgraded firmware in the future? I appreciate that there have been other postings on this subject, but sadly, we aren't all able to understand technical talk, and direct questions usually get straightforard answers! I also take your point about researching equipment well before purchase - I bought the player from Amazon with some vouchers I had, and did do quite a bit of comparison of other similar priced (ie. cheap!) players, and felt this was the best value for money. The removal of Macrovision isn't by any means essential, and the player was not bought for that purpose, but it would just be an added bonus if we can get it to work! Best regards Bunches xx BTW - Have recorded some satellite programmes this afternoon - they have worked brilliantly, it's so much cooler than recording onto VHS!!! I would recommend the 5006!
LCHSG, I never implied that the MV nut couldn't eventually be cracked. All that I meant was that currently the 'Ilo Hacker' program isn't resetting the correct byte to disable MV.
Bunches, I assume that you're in the UK because your LiteOn is a LVW-5006 .. right? Anyways, here is another forum that may just be worth your effort to register, lurk and maybe post your question in .. http://ccgi.mgillespie.plus.com/liteon/smf/ And once again Guitarman's site .. Maybe even PM him here, he's an AD member Gtrman http://ncc2315.com/ilo/
LCSHG, I used the PRESENT tense, not the future tense when describing whether MV could be disabled on firmware 101. Also, you can down grade to 0098 (I've done it). There are thousands of people homeless and dying in the aftermath of Katrina and you're wasting time and energy mincing words with me. Have you no sense of perspective?
