Sound Problems from DVD Player

Made VCD and SVCD with the guide. Plays perfectly in my Philips DVD 825 player. However, no sound comes through my receiver to my surround system. If I directly plug headphones into the front of the DVD Player I get sound from 1 speaker side but not both. I use S Video out to the TV and Optical out to my receiver for the sound. The exact same settings play DVD's and Music CD's perfectly through my system. I think I may need to use different settings in DVD2AVI in the audio tab. Could anyone pls offer any advice.
