I am copying home video clips from my Mini DV , using WMM to create .avi files, encoding via TMGPenc , then burning the mpeg files via Nero. I just wonder how many minutes worth of film I can expect to fit on a standard DVD rw (4.75mb) ?

    Thanks.

    WITH OR WITH OUR COMPRESSION?

o and you really only have 4.38 gig of space to play around with , should only burn to say 4.2 gig :as the rim of the disc is where the dye is more often un even and where errors occur more.

How can I tell if Im using compression ? Is that what Nero will do if the file is bigger than a DVD ? Or is it a setting I can choose.

    Thanks in advance.

Like Andmerr stated you have 4.3 gig of space on a blank. If the file you want to burn is less than 4.3 gig you don't need any compression. If its larger than 4.3 gig you have to compress. If using Nero you need to use Nero Recode to compress. Other options are DVD Shrink or CloneDVD 2 to name a few.

Ok , thanks. Im not sure if I have Nero Recoder (as Im not at home right now). I would also guess any compression means loss of quality?

I have burned 1 minute of tape to my DVD as a practice , and the file before I burned it was 36,000 kbs. That seems to work out at about getting 130 minutes worth on my DVD (using my fingers and toes !)

I havent had chance to look at how much of the DVD it has actually taken up , but does that sound about right ?

    Cheers.
