Hi, I have been buring with Nero Recode or Nero Burning ROM but get the following message. Advice on how to fix this problem is appreciated.

    Thanks. Using P4, 512RAM.

    Welcome to aD!
First thing- edit those serial #'s out! They begin w/ 1A
They'll fall into the wrong hands!
Your firmware is waaay behind - you need to update it. Here's a link:
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=315

Your drive doesn't like the media nor can it recognize it. The log only shows that your using a +R. A firmware update should sort this out.

Thanks, I will give this a try. I had tried to update the firmware using the Dell flash utility but it won't allow me to target the drive. I will try the firmware download from the above linked site.

Post back w/ your results. Not really sure why you couldn't flash your drive unless you picked the wrong update.

Unfortunately, it is the same situation; it will not allow me to target the Phillips drive. I am going to remove the Clone drive that keeps appearing and see if it will allow after that.

Try that but I'm no hardware expert. They show in the log as being on separate ports.
Let us know how it goes. I sure someone here can help you sort it out!

Unfortunately, it is only allowimg me to target the Instant Drive CD14 and I can't pull down the Phillips Drive as the Instant Drive is the only one listed. Any suggestions how I can target the Philips drive with the flash firmware update program?

    Thanks

I don't want to give you the wrong advice. I myself would play with a few things but then again it's my pc if I screw it up. Let me see if I can find someone.

    sj4231,
Lets see if I get this correct
    1. You are trying to update the firmware for the burner ( flash it)
    2. You have a PHILIPS DVD+RW-D28
    3. You were given a site to update from but it does not recog. the burner when you try to flash it.
    4. These are the drives in the computer:

    CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST CD-ROM GCR-8481B atapi Port 2 ID 0 DMA: On

CdRomPeripheral : PHILIPS DVD+RW-D28 atapi Port 2 ID 1 DMA: On

CdRomPeripheral : VOBID InstantDrive CD 14 VOBID Port 3 ID 0 DMA:
    Off
    CdRomPeripheral :ELBY DVD-ROM 1.0 ElbyVCD

Here is what I would try.
    1. Turn off the computer and unplug the power cable in back. Take side cover off and make sure that you touch the inside case to discharge any static.
    2. Disconnect the power supply to the VOBID instant Drive CD and the HL-DT-ST CD-ROM GCR-8481B and also the ELBY DVD-ROM 1.0 ElbyVCD . Also disconnect the respective IDE channels ( Grey ribbon about 2 inches wide)
    3. Now the only Optical device you have connected is the PHILIPS DVD+RW-D28 . Verify this
    4. Plug the cable into the back to re-connect the power and now power up the computer.
    5. Now try flashing the burner as it is the only optical device connected
You should have been able to Flash w/o doing the above but it is the only thing I can think that will help. When I flash the program always asks me which device and I have to click on the correct drive to flash. Since I do not have a Dell I can not duplicate what your problem is. Let me know if this works as in theory it should. If you can not update then the burner might be going South or the cables or MOBO could also be going South

    Car. Mike:

Thanks but no luck. I disable the CD drive as you indicated ( I have only a the cd drive and the phillips dvd/cd-rw drive but the flash utility still won't recognize the Philips in the target drive.

I even used the power plug and ribbon cable from the cd drive for the philips (they are both on the same cord and ribbon extension). Both were listed as slave drives, so I tried making the Philips the master and then the slave again (with the cd drive changing places, even with it disconnected from power and ribbon cable.) No luck.

I then disabled the cd drive within the computer settings, powered down yet again, and it still won't recognize it. Kinda crazy, isn't it?

Here is my next question. Before doing any of this, I was able to get the Philips drive to burn dvds again by using Nero ROM and Philips branded discs.

My question is, I have purchased the Pioneer DVR-509 drive and am thinking of installing it in place of the CD drive. Is it possible to have 2 DVD-RW drives on a computer and, if so, I will want the Pioneer to take precedence. Should it be the master or slave drive? I am assuming Master but I don't typically work with computer hardware.

    Thanks for your help.

This one has me perplexed now as it should have worked. The only thing I can think of is maybe he drive is getting ready to go bad.
Yes you can have 2 DVD-Rw drives on a computer. Make the one that you want to burn the master ( make sure the config. on the back is correct and the other one the slave.
Let me sleep on this as I might come up w/ a better idea on the drive that will not take a flashing
