What is the picture quality like in 4hr recording mode, and how does it compare to the Panasonic DMR ES10 4hr recording mode? I have settled on one of these two recorders. Thanks

Good luck trying to find someone who has directly compared two recorders on a particular mode! Though I can't answer your specific question, perhaps this will be more helpful than the first answer you got. I do have the Sony recorder and I've only used the 1, 1.5, and 2-hour modes so far. Picture quality is fantastic on all of them. With 4-hour I would expect a slight deterioration, but that's just a guess.
Thanks. I went with the Panasonic. I tested the 4hr mode and it looks as good as a 2hr VHS recording. My next recorder with be a dual layer burner. I read last week that dual layer RW disks are the way.
