I changed from a 40 gig to a 160 gig western Digital Hard drive . I used the original recovery discs to re-install XP and all the drivers and everything seemed to be going ok untill it gave the following message:

file is damaged or cannot be found

    windows-mainfile system32\hal\dll

    Re-install file

Can anybody tell me how to fix this or what is causing it, please please?

go to http://www.dll-files.com/ and download the .dll file you need and load it into your sysytem and see if that solves your problem, respong back with error messages after that if any...

You might want to just clone the 160 from the 40 gig if it is working OK. Try norton ghost 9.0.

yeah, whenever you get an error like that, it basically means you should format and reinstall. when i got that error message last time that's what i did. this time i got smart and partitioned my drive in a way that makes it easy to back stuff up
