    Hi,

I'm new with burning DVD's, but I'm catching on to it. My problem is I don't know what type of DVD Disk to use.

I have DVD-R disks but they won't work. It says DATA on them should it say something like video or what?

I also purchased some DVD+RW which says Video, Data and Photos. They work very well burning DVD Movies, but they cost way to much.

My question is what type of DVD-R disk is best to use for burning DVD Movies and I'm looking for the cheapest that I can get by with.

Could anyone please tell me what type of disk to get and what should it say on the DVD R disk?

    Thank's A Million...

I am in the majority here as far as good media. I started using Taiyo Yuden dvd-r and about 125 very successful burns later am hooked for life. You can find them online from a reputable vendor such as Rima.com or Supermediastores.com. They are not that much more expensive than the crap media out there and are well worth it. To find out more just check out the dvd-r media section here on AD. Very informative!

Thank's for your help. I have a few more questions if you don't mind?

Q1. Which is the best to use if any DVD-R or DVD+R?

Q2. Can a person burn a movie on a DVD-R/DVD+R Data Disk or should it say Video or something on it?

    Thank's

I use the dvd-r with no trouble on my comp or either standalone dvd player I have. Probably just a case of trial and error to see which works best for you.
I don't see what the difference would be in a disc marked DATA? As long as it is quality media, it shouldn't matter.

You've got to take into consideration if your dvd burner supports both plus and dash format. Some of the older burners are not dual format.

The main difference between plus and dash is compatability. Not only knowing what the exact format your burner is capable of,but also those stand alone players that will play your backup discs. If you have a dual format burner, you can try some quality media in both formats. Test several of these on the stand alone dvd players/ps2s/x-box/and pc drives. They will tell you which format THEY prefer!.

Some burners, like my benqs, can booktype. This is the ability to alter the plus format and turn it into dvd-rom format for better compatability on stand alone players.Again, not all burners support this.

What is your burner's brand name and Model#?

Data is less strain on a dvd backup. Movies are more intense, especially when you are compressing a 7 gig movie onto a 4.38 gig blank disc. That's why you need the quality media like taiyo yuden/verbatim data life plus and ritek. The quality media will prevent many issues, but mainly on those stand alone players!

I booktype my backups,so therefore only use plus format from now on. My own personal pc drives and stand alones can play either of my benq dash or dvd-rom backups, but some of my friends and family do have trouble with my dash backups. You'll notice when a certain dvd players will give you a NO DISC inserted or dirty/illegal disc type of error.

You can find quality dvd+/-r media for under 40 cents a piece here in the USA when it is on sale at local stores.Sony 1x-8x/fuji8x/maxell/verbatim are all easy to find locally and go on sale quite ofter.

Those genuine tys may be higher, but net stores like rima/supermediastore/meritline/ can have some good prices on them.

Thank's to you both for all your help. I don't know my DVD Serial Number, but it's a Lite-On Brand Name and it also says on it DVD+ReWriteable, DVD+R DL. It's a Dual Layer Burner.

Does this help any at all?

    Thank's Again...

Here's a free program you can download that will tell us your exact model# of that lite-on.It also comes in handy to tell us the firmware version of your litey and also MID codes of your blank media.

    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm

Most lite-ons are capable of booktyping,so you may want to start with the plus format.Just make sure it is quality media. It'll save you many issues later on.There's a booktyping for lite-on that you may want to check on.You may want to bookmark this site to your favorites for future reference:

Thank's, this is what is said about the DVD Burner,

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+RW:pHILIPS-041-000]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Disc & Book Type : [DVD+RW] - [DVD+RW]
    Manufacturer Name : [Philips]
    Manufacturer ID : [PHILIPS]
    Media Type ID : [041]
    Product Revision : [Not Specified]
    Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
    Recording Speeds : [1.6x-4x]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    [ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just purchased some DVD+R Disk and they won't work. I use Imation Video-Photos-Data DVD+RW and they work Great.

I just got some Imation Video-Photos-Data DVD+R and they won't work.

When I use the DVD+RW the lite on my burner stays lite up until the burn process is done.

When I use the DVD+R I noticed that the lite on the burner keeps blinking, but it shows that it is burning.

After the burn process is done my computer or my home DVD player won't play the movie.

Do you have any idea what I can do?

    Thank's Again...

The Smartburn program displayed this message,

    Drive Type = DVD DUAL
Disc Type = DVD+R (Single Layer)
    Disc MID = 43 4D 43 20 4D 41 47 00 (CMC MAG.)
    Disc TID = 45 30 31 (E01)
    Nominal Capacity = 4.38GB
Manufacturer Maybe = CMC Magnetics Corporation
    SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 8.0X (Write)

I'm not sure it will help. I can't understand why the +RW will work and the +R won't.

Open up dvdidentifier and lookt at the top for:

Drive selection and Drive write capabilities. This is your burner model# and firmware version. Firmware has to be updated every now and then, usually when problems like burns failed during the lead-in phase.

    Example for mine:
    [F:] Benq DVD DD DW1620 [FW B7W9]

Let us know what yours says.I think I have to update my sig. I thought I had B7-V9 fw, LOL.

    Those +rws are: PHILIPS-041-000

Not exactly quality media, about in the middle. But they are erasable and great for messing around.

    Those +rs:
Disc Type = DVD+R (Single Layer)
    Disc MID = 43 4D 43 20 4D 41 47 00 (CMC MAG.)
    Disc TID = 45 30 31 (E01)
    Nominal Capacity = 4.38GB
Manufacturer Maybe = CMC Magnetics Corporation

These are CMCMAG-E01- Very poor quality media. That usually explains it.These will have to be burned at their slowest speed and at a reduced backup target for dvd movie backkups. Data may be ok,but I don't know for sure.

To summarize what I see, both those Imations have 2 different manufacturers, and both aren't exactly top quality stuff.

    Hi,

it's me again. I have a bigger problem now. I done some reading about updating the firmware on my Lite-On DVD Burner and I did so, but now my computer doesn't notice the DVD Burner is there. I use to have C: which is my HardDrive, D: Which Was my DVD Burner and E: which is my CD Burner. Now all I have it C: and D: but D: is now my CD Burner.

The Green lite on the DVD burner just keeps blinking and when I open My Computer in Win 98 it only shows my CD Burner.

Please tell me that you know how to fix this problem???

I'm so sorry for bothering you nice people, but I'm not that smart and I need all the help I can get.

    Thank's A Million...

    Here's the official lite-on site..
    http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download.htm

Keep this site bookmarked in as your favorites. It also has a booktyping utility so if you run into compatability issues on stand alones, booktyping usually help out.

Do you mean 1673s or 1673sx?

Are you sure that FW is JS05?

I believe the latest fw on these are JS0C in that link i posted.I couldn't open it up to find out. That number 5 is odd,it should be a letter.

Flashing to the incorrect fw could result in wiping out a drive. That's why it is recommended to dowload the update from a trusted source. Also leaving a disc inside that litey while you updated it is a nono.

I no nothing of windows 98 so I can't help you there.Maybe someone else can help us with that OS. I'd imagine it may be similar to XP and uninstall drivers/reboot/and install drivers. Even check device manager on your IDE ata/atapi controllers for primary and secondary and make sure they are in DMA or UDMA mode, not pio mode.

    Good Luck
