Just a question: which kind of audio do you have?
Can you open the AVI with VirtualDubMod, do Stream___Stream List and post here the results?
My suspect is that the you might receive a warning , if you open the 'bad movies' with VirtualDubMod.
Can you post here the results of the same check, made
    1) on the 'perfect' AVIs
    2) on the 'bad' AVIs.

I don't think the burning could be the problem. Unless you use a low-quality media burned at high speed. I , for example, must use good-brand CDs burner 4X for music or my portable music player won't load them), you shouldn't create troubles on burning.
Also, since once I used to play with the PSX [very bad CD-ROM lenses] once, my habit is to burn the CDs at 4X (the minimum burn speed for my burner), to avoid fatiguing my DVD lens or wasting CDs.
