Trying to output stereo to my 5 speakers

Well, my brother is trying to actually. I was hoping you guys could help me figure this out for him. He's living in an apt right now for college, and he uses a laptop. He has an old 5.1 surround set lying around that he wants to hook the laptop to.

He's only interested in stereo sound because he only listens to cds and mp3s anyways. I was thinking there would be an adapter to output from the headphone jack on the laptop to the 6 (5 and one for the sub) RCA plugs on the subwoofer input. (From there the sub outputs via speaker cable to the 5 speakers)

Yea the setup seems archaic, but then again its just for 2 channel music anyways.

it would be simpler to buy a stereo speaker set for P.C's. cheapest are about £10.
