I have a dvd burner that will only work on dvd-rw 2x or dvd-r 1x-4x. It is getting increasingly difficult to find discs that fit these specs. Are they being phased out? I have been able to find them at Rima.com, but I can't ever find them in any of the stores. I like the burner - it has been very reliable, and I'm happy with the quality of the discs I have burned so I'm not ready to upgrade. Should I buy a bunch of discs and hoard them, or do you think they'll continue to be manufactured? Thanks for your help. I am learning a ton from this site!!! T
if the price is right. some burners come with firmware updates that let them accept faster speeds.imo the 1x,2.4x,and4x will be phased out eventually.look at the good side 16x burners are getting cheaper all the time. when hd&bd come out sinle layer dvds and dual layer dvds should go down even more.
As opposed to stocking up on a type of medium which will become increasingly harder to find, why not just invest $39 - 50 in a brand-new burner from the usual suspects (newegg, monarch, etc.)? Seems like it might be a wiser move in the long run, and you'll be able to save time on your burns in the future.
T, Compatibility should not be affected by the speed rating of the media. ask a friend to give you a 16x or even 8x dvd-r, and try burning it on your drive. Just to be safe, try an rw also. Your drive should automatically default to 4x speed (max). If it works, no need to stock up. if it doesnt...
