Make sure both your xbox and laptop have static ip's assigned and then you should be able to connect.

This tutorial will help you to configure a static IP on you laptop: http://www.portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm
Click your O/S and follow the steps. You will use the same info to configure you xbox, of course with the exception of the actual IP address. Otherwise they'd conflict with one another.

i read somewhere that i cant ftp with a wireless connection to my notebook because the network card wont support 2 connections. is this true. and also you said the lan connection and the xbox have to have different IP's?

You could probably do that if your xbox had a wireless router

Of course, if the are the same they will conflict with one another. Two things on the same network cannot have the same IP.

It's like two houses on the same street with the exact same address.
