Problem burning with Nero to my USB connected LG writer

I have major problems burning with Nero (and DVDShrink). I have a LG 4163-B DVD writer connected by USB to my HP ze5300 laptop which will not allow me to burn copies of DVD movies. I can do data disks okay.

I thought it was a problem with either the ASPI file or the firmware for the DVD unit - as suggested on this site. The real problems started after I put new firmware into the LG writer and loaded the updated ASPI file into the PC. The Toshiba SD-R2132 DVD-Rom on my laptop now no longer recognises CDs or DVDs. XP says there is no problem.

Tried to roll back to a previous driver, but that didn't work - it asked me to find one on the system or a CD - I don't have the driver as a backup anywhere, not even on the system disks. I went to the Toshiba site to see if they had a driver for the unit on my laptop and I couldn't find one (it's a SD-R2312).

As for burning DVD movies on the LG, every time it comes to burning the log window says "SCSI command aborted" and stops after 1%. I've ruined several DVD-R's this way.

    My problems are:
    1. How do I get my laptop's DVD-Rom back up and running properly?
    2. How do I solve the problem of burning to the LG writer?

    Is it a.) a software problem b.) a hardware problem, c.) both.??

Can anybody help pls? I'm losing my rag! :-[

hi. i may very well buy this very same burner this week, to house in my Belkin USB2 enclosure. i've been umming and ahhing over this for ages as i read too many bad things about USB burning but my enclosures work brilliantly for ALL my ripping as i have a CD Burner/DVD-Rom combo drive in one of the Belkins and it works perfectly for ripping and burning CD's.

Even if i don't buy one i'll have a look into your problem...

Thanks,) a friend suggested updating the USB drivers - but it's a Via Rev 5 Universal Host Companion Controller and there's no updated driver available. Maybe reinstalling might do something??

OK! Got the Toshiba DVD up and working again, so that's one part of the problem solved. Found the driver for it on my PC in the Windows directory.

Still not solved LG burning problem.

right. i have another LG 4167B on order so tomorrow it'll be in my USB2 enclosure this time tomorrow but i'm confident it'll be fine in the enclosure. i have an LG dvd-rom/cd writer combo drive housed in my other USB2 enclosure and that's ripped like 2000 movies while living in said enclosure.

what burning program you using ?, and have yout got USB2 ? as USB1 won't cut it from what i remember

Yeah, using a HP Pavilion laptop 5350 series - 512Mb of memory, 2.80 Ghz pentium IV. Using Nero 6.3.1.6.

It's funny you should mention it, but I have two USB 2.0 ports on the back, and a USB port for the mouse. However... once or twice when it failed to burn it said the device would not work as it wasn't plugged into a hi-speed port.

I've always used the USB 2.0 ports at the back, so why would this happen? It's F&(cked! PCs are moody b**stards. If it would help you I can try burning again and then post the log here.

yup, logfile would be good. i ended up having a 4163B delivered instead of the 4167B but that's a great drive and it's in my USB2 enclosure; it's now done quite a few rips and also quite a few faultless burns so far via the 4163B thru USB2...

    - Nero's too old, update (free) to latest 6.x version - 6.6.0.16. get 'Update-Package 1' from here - http://www.nero.com/nero6/en/nero-up.php

    - firmware is one version out of date, A105 is here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1973

    - yup, Nero's too old to recognise your burner

    - try to close down more programs to ensure sufficient free memory prior to all burning

    - get rid of Roxio, plus to fully remove it you may need to google search for 'Roxio Zapper'

Update: Tried my burner to make a data disc last night, and it didn't work - thanks for the tip on Nero, going to update and see how it works.

The firmware update you mentioned is for Windows ME according to LG updates.

What's the problem with Roxio? I can remove it, but I didn't realise it was causing a problem.

As for the memory, are you saying shut down in Task Manager? (I don't run a lot of programs concurrently.)

    Cheers for your help

Updated the Nero Burning as suggested. Had minimal success so far. Now I seem to have a different error msg.

It now says "illegal disc" when it fails to burn - been trying to break it in slowly by burning data discs. Hit rate to date is "ruined 5 - burned 1". Wow.

Memory is still allocating a lot to programs which aren't running - how can I stop this apart from going into task manager and shutting them down (which basically says that shutting them down can affect system stability)?

Think the idea of a USB 2.0 card is something, but b4 I purchase (and waste more money - which this LG burner is feeling like £80 down the gurgler) can you give me more details on why this would work?

Just to be a completist, here's the log from one of the "illegal disc" failures... Thanx.

I´ll apreciate if anyone can help me.

I recently bought a Zynet Enclosure (cd-r3-u2) and a LG 4167b dvd burner. The only issue i have is that if i try to burn a cd-r using the disc-at-once method, it fails in the "lead-in" step. I´d tried using several brands of media, and won´t work. Actually, i can burn cd-r's with track-at-once. I´m using Nero 6.6.0.16. Here's the log.

@feromone - slightly late replying to this one.....who changed the calendar to November!

    - get updated to A105, i've been using that for a while now myself. try navigating from here - http://www.lge.com/support/software_gcsc.jsp - i can never find a direct link, but a few clicks from there and you'll find it...

    - as your burner is external to the PC that question mark is fine

    - try to close down more programs to ensure sufficient free memory prior to all burning

    - very nice discs

    - follow ALL suggestions

    - try 4x. my 4167B won't do 8x, whether mounted internally or in one of my USB2.0 enclosures. however my 4163B nearly always does 8x fine (i prefer to do 4x but have been experimenting with 8x on the 4163B which lives in my other USB2.0 enclosure)

    -

CDRALW2K.SYS is part of Roxio. try uninstalling Roxio (doesn't always play well with Nero), then you might need to fully remove using Roxio Zapper - http://www.microadvantage.net/utilities

    @gzaloam -

    - firmware is up to date. see my comments in feromone's logfile reply. my 4167B in my opinion, is nowhere near as good as the 4163B, hopefully it will become a better drive with future firmware releases. mine always fails at the lead-in stage when i do 8x

    - as your burner is external to the PC that question mark is fine

    - if nothing else works maybe try different media, but first try mounting the burner internally if you can, to try to rule out the USB enclosure.

    - see other suggestions

i've tried everything and it's still failling, the chipset is Genesys GL 811, How good is it? The only enclosures I seem to find in Mexico are zynet, cosmos and bytecc. The Bytecc comes in two models, one with firewire alone and the other is combo, Do the both of them have the oxford 911, how good is this chip?. Finally, will the enclosure work if i use a 6pin-4pin firewire cable?

    Thanks.

Creaky, maybe you can help me too. My external is a Plextor 716A. It used to work fine before my hard drive crashed. But all three of my attempts since have no worked to burn DVD-Rs. I have a brand new hard drive and had to reinstall all my burning software.

    @goterps7 -

    - firmware's up to date

    - as your burner is external to the PC that question mark is fine

    - free memory is too low, well virtually non-existant, make sure to close down more programs prior to dvd work/burning to free up more memory

    - are you sure these are genuine TY media ?

    - reduce burn speed

    - see previous comment, try 4x

    - InCD is Nero's horrid 'packet writing software', uninstall Nero then uninstall completely via Nero's Clean Tools, then reinstall Nero WITHOUT installing InCD
