I'm having great trouble writing dvd-r's on my Acer laptop. I get rafts of crc errors (different number each time). I take it from this that crc errors can be generated reading and writing. It records cd-r's with 100% success. Acer have told me to turn of Norton Antivirus when using the drive - no difference. They also told me to get rid of MSN XP SP2 - too much aggro. What should I try: DVD+R instead of DVD-R? Different burner - how do I get a trial version of Nero - the version I downloaded says it's a trial/demo version but doesn't seem to work? Anything else you can suggest? TIA Tony
its probably a media problem ,what kind of blank media are you using? please dont say memorex lol the better media out there to use is Taiyo Yuden ,Verbatim or Ritek or stuff that codes out as Taiyo Yuden which would be Fuji Film,Sony and most Maxell dvd+r and your burn speed is VERY important also burn at 4X max using good media and it should solve your problems as far as the nero program you can download it here at this site so delete the one you have and reload the verison from this site. and burning offline without any other programs running is important and make sure your firmware is up to date,heres some links that may help good luck and shoot us back if you have any other questions firmware link http://www.firmware.fr.st/ guides for burning http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/index.html
try googling for Nero's info-tool (free), run that and post results here. DVD burners have 2 lasers btw, one for cd and one for dvd but let's see what the logfile shows, it's very detailed and might show some conflicts or some clues..
Still can't get Nero burner to work - says my trial period has expired - though I've never downloaded it til today. What options from InfoTool do you want and where can I find the logfile - I've also got Nero CD-DVD Speed if that helps. Tony

- firmware's out of date, 1032 is here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1823 - i'm not so bothered about info-tool not detecting your cpu etc, but you only have 256MB total memory - so you need to ensure you close down as many programs as you can prior to all burns. i idr 512mb to be the minimum for DVD work/burning - see if this helps re this Gear driver - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/207410 - can you try removing this ?. I leave my virus checker (Mcafee) running permanently, however i have more than 256mb
What s/w do you suggest to get back any recoverable files from these corrupt discs - I've been using the recover option on cdcheck but it's taking to long - I'd be quite happy just to get the good files back and ignore any duff files completely. Tony
Hooray! Unrelated: 1. Given my laptop a much needed defrag, and 2. Run a freeware Registry Cleaner (after which I had to reinstall NTI CD & DVD MAKER). I've: 1. Installed version 1032 of the driver, and 2. Burned a disc at 2x whilst in Safe mode and all seems a-ok - no crc errors - will try some other stuff now. Should I still uninstall that Gear filter or play it safe as all is working? Thanks again Tony
