hi all...ty in advanced to any1 that may be able to help resolve the prob's im having.
first off...i used to have the 6.0 version of nero and had to reformat my OS so installed the 6.0 again and updated it to the 6.3 version. i know that there is a latest version of 6.6 but i have a "loaned" copy and dont know if i can actually get the 6.6...so im using the 6.3 for now. before i had to reformat the puter, nero would always work fine and i had no prob's making cd's, vcd's, etc.
since i had my OS uninstalled/reinstalled ive been having probs with burning and can not get 1 cd burned. specifically, the prob is this...
when using Nero 6.3 im able to open up any of nero's windows with no prob and compile the cd or whatever. the moment it attempts to burn it then gets stuck on the "Checking Disc" section and then it fails to proceed with the burn. if you leave it alone, it will remain idle forever, showing no progress and nothing will burn. if you attempt to close the burning rom at that point, it will freeze/lock up and i have to completely reboot. but either way, the burn is not possible.
i then attempted to use Windows Media Player 9 (which i never use) but just to try it out...and it was able to burn 5 out of the 19 tracks. after the burn of the 5th track, it stopped on me stating something cant continue to burn and again the program froze. interestingly enough, it did complete the burn for those 5 tracks, was able to convert it from mp3 format to cda format and they do play in a regular stereo.

on a side note...all my drivers are up to date, the software recognizes both my cd rom and my cd burner drives, im using windows xp sp2, my cd-r's are compatible and ready for burns, all programs are completely closed when burning, nothing running in background, my antivirus (norton) is disabled, etc. i would copy/paste the nero error log file but i dont see it under the nero folder. i just see a nero.txt file and dont know if that is the one?

if anyone has experience burning and can help with this, i would really appreciate it. thanks.

Can you go here C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistoryand get the very last section of your failure or successfully burned log? Now remember to take out your Nero serial number that starts with something like 1A23-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX and post it here, so it's easier for other members try to sort things out for you?

I think you should be able to upgrade to the latest Nero 6 (6.6.0.16) without any issue. Go here http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/General_CleanTool.html and get it to run to clean out your current Nero. Once that process is completed, download Nero Ultra 6 (6.6.0.16) and reinstall it back to your system.

NOTE: keep in mind to make sure that you have the latest firmware on your dvd burner's firmware as well. This will help your burner to recognize other media and codes easier.

    hi ALKOHOL...
ty for the reply. i explained in my message above, that i do not have a nero history file in my nero folder. i know it sounds strange, but i dont have one. i have a nero.txt file in there, but i know its not what you are looking for. i realize you are looking for the error log, but for some reason when i installed nero..it just didnt create an error log file or history file in the nero folder. the main problem im having is that nero burning rom freezes or hangs in the "CHECKING DISC" phase of the burn. i need to know how to resolve this.
also, i checked the nero aspi and it is working fine, but the system aspi is in yellow and says not installed. perhaps, that has something to do with it. i downloaded the force aspi 4.71 thinking it may help (as suggested in other forum), but dont know how to use it.
please, if any1 has had the same prob of the hanging in checking disc phase of burns, please help! im at my wits end with this thing.
    thanks

    HI CREAKY...
ty so much for taking the time to reply. ive seen you help a lot folks out here, so i appreciate your time.
i ran the info tool from the nero smart start window and it just minimizes after its done and doesnt let me cut/paste it. it kinda runs through the info tool, and then the start smart window pops back up and the configuration settings. would any info in the nero.txt file in the nero folder help or not really? let me know if there is another way around that or what else i can do to help you.
    thanks.

    hi again creaky....
no worries, we figured it out. turns out my nero was installed and running fine, without having to have tweaked with the dma, aspi, drivers/firmware, AIN, blah blah blah...lol..
all it was... the guy that reformatted the puter, mistakengly put back the ribbon cables wrong. the jumper was ok but the ribbon cables were mix-matched. put them back on the correct way, rebooted, and was burning again in no time.
so i just wanted to let you know, since you seem to be trying to make a genuine effort to help.
    thanks anyyways though...

    lol...yeah, definitely a DOH moment!

by the way, id figure id ask Creaky or Alkohol a quick question having to do with Nero...but off the original topic...thought i would keep it on this thread.

considering i have a "loaned" copy and that im currently running the 6.3.0.0 version... would i be able to update to the 6.6.0.1.6 without any problems?
would i have to use the same registration/serial # im using now, when im prompted by the update?
would you guys recommend a clean uninstall of everything and then just installing the 6.6 from scratch w/ my current serial #?
and lastly, what are the major changes b/w 6.3 and 6.6 and is it worth the trouble?

    thanks again.

for updating you can but try to update.

as to what's changed in Nero, try this, here's a few of the latest changes - http://www.nero.com/nero6/en/Nero_Burning_ROM_6_Release_Notes.html#a1

i haven't re-read the whole thread, but for me personally, i only burn audio & data cd's, and for my dvd burning i do all movie preparation via dvd shrink & dvd decrypter etc, so all Nero has to is burn the movie files to disc in a 'dvd-video' compilation. so for me i could use any old burning program for the simple uses i have for Nero. So i personally very much doubt i'll go Nero 7 for instance

    thx Creaky, appreciate the feedback.
i didnt understand everything you wrote though...i guess youre saying i could go ahead and update without having to uninstall my current 6.3. and then i guess i would input the same serial # when im prompted?
no, and as far as nero 7, im not using that either..at least not for near the future. but thx for the link of the differences between the 6.3 & 6.6
    thx

i was just saying, i only use Nero in it's basic form. However i always recommend ppl upgrade as it's common sense to keep stuff up to date. i can't help you with the serial thing

    @mindcandy,

You should be fine to update your Nero 6.3 to the last (latest) of Nero 6 Ultra 6.6.0.16 if you have a serial. Honestly, I believe that 6.6.0.16 is one of the best or perhaps a finest product from Nero ever. I've been burning tons and tons of DVD movies and PS2 games using 6.6.0.16 and I've never made any coasters, so far they all burned successfully. At this moment you don't want Nero 7 yet, a lot of people had reported that there are some bugs in Nero 7 which has a lot of issues. I don't know when I'll upgrade or purchase 7 yet, simply because I'm happy with 6.6.0.16 at the moment.

To update to the latest Nero 6 Ultra 6.6.0.16 you need to completely wipe out your current Nero from your system. Below is what I've already told you on my very first reply to you in this thread.
