Hello I am new to this forum and DVD burning. I just got Nero 7 ultra edition whatever that means, (the guy at dell recomended it). I had not done any prior research into DVD burning software until after I had bought it.

I mainly want to use the program to just burn DVD movies with the extra features. I tried to copy a dvd yesterday and got a message it is copyrighted so it could not do it. I take it Nero doesnt have a deCSS program built in, so what do I need to download or do to make this work?

I am not really sure what DVD type to click on to copy either, there is a choice of DVD copy(which would seem like the logical choice), then there is DVD-Video, DVD-ROM(UDF), DVD-ROM(UDF/ISO), DVD ROM(ISO), and DVD-ROM(Boot) which I am assuming is to make a boot disk.

Sorry if the questions sound dumb. So basically how do I copy a DVD with nero 7.

    Thanks for the help

u need a program to take away the copyright protection, i use anydvd, it is not freeware, u need to buy it or pirate it, or u can download a freeware copy of dvdshrink, which will use nero to burn, but it always you to shrink a dual layer 8.4gb dvd to a single layer 4.7 dvd, and u can make ISO images or just rip the files as they are right off the disk, dvdshrink has a built in decrypter, so u dont realy need anydvd if u use dvdshrink, but i use both, just google dvdshrink and anydvd, and there might be a link to download dvdshrink on this website, hope that helped, good luck

I see you can download dvd shrink or dvd decrypter from this website. As you can see from my previous post I am trying to burn dvds with Nero. Will both of these programs remove the encryption so I can burn the dvd. Is one better or recommended more over the other.

    Thanks

i only use dvdshrink, nero, and anydvd, never used dvd decrypter. if u want to copy dvds with nero get anydvd, and it will take off the copyright protection in the background automaticly!, but i am guessing u dont want to pay any money and avoid pirating if u can, so if u decide to use dvdshrink and nero together, u stick in the dvd, and open dvdshrink, and it will analyis the dvd, from that point u can decide if u want to shrink the dvd-9 to dvd-5 or if u just want to make an exact copy of dvd-9 to dvd-9 dvdr, and change the option to no compression, and click on backup, from that point u will be givin a option of ripping it to ISO or Folder, or to burn it right that second. if u back it up as a ISO then u can use nero to burn the ISO image. If u burn it within dvdshrink, dvdshrink will use Nero in the background to burn it, which is seemless! and it will rip the dvd for about 1hr, depending on the size and compression. then it will ask u to put in a blank dvdr, then 10mins later if 8x dvdr u have a fresh clean dvd. hope this helped u. there are also dvd shrink and dvd decrypter read mes on this page somewhere! good luck by the way dvd shrink will automaticly decrypt the copyright protection!

Anthlon thanks, that really helps. I am going to download dvd shrink and give it a try. I do need to worry about downloading a ASPI do I. I think nero might have one built in, but read that was something you had to do if you download dvd decrypter.

Also the fastest possible way to copy a dvd(from start to finish) making an ISO then burning that with Nero like you said. About how long will this process take. You had said an hour or more if you just used dvd shrink to burn it. I'm guessing burning the ISO with Nero would be shorter?

nero has a ASPI check and install program free on their site: after fighting with win98 over ASPI for months, i finally found out wtf ASPI was, and the nero version fixed it right up lol. (don't have the link, but its not hard to find in downloads section)

adaptec website also has one available: its the aspi i currently use.

    have fun

Thanks, I just burned my first dvd using dvd shrink and Nero. I created an ISO file then burned it with nero from that. The copy worked great with all the features. The ISO file that is created, is that file temporary, then is it deleted when I close the program. Or do I have to delete it manually. I just didnt want to be burning dvds and have all of these large files taking up space that I did not know I had to delte.

Well guess I just answered my own question, I checked and saw that it stored the file to the C drive. So I will be deleting it.

However, is there a good sight where you can make labels or print out dvd covers to insert in the dvd case?

Ok, I am new to this as well. I read all the messages, and tried to copy "The Longest Yard". I ripped it to the hard drive as an ISO file with DVD Shrink 3.2. I have Nero 6.0something and now am trying to burn it to a DVD disk. I import the file and it shows to be 4.4 mb. wich is under the 4.7 max. but the problem is nero will not open up the "NEXT" button. All I can do is go back. I cant figure out what is wrong and what it wants me to fix before it will burn it.

What exact program selection should you use to copy the dvd?
If I rip it with shrink to the hard drive as an ISO which many of you said is the best way what exact selection should I choose to get that ISO file to a disk?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Byrdman, I'll try and help you out since I just figured all of this out today for the first time. After DVD shirnk scans the dvd and makes it and ISO file, whic took me about 20 min., a window with a link to where the file was copied popped up. I clicked on the link to where the ISO was and it automatically started running Nero. I just selected copy DVD and it worked fine. It then asks you if you just want to write to the disk, or finalize. I just checked "write" and it worked fine for me. I don't plan on putting anything else on the disk but finalize would work also.

Some of the choices nero gives me are under the "back up" category
-recode and entire dvd to dvd
    -recode main movie to dvd

Or the "Favorites" category has copy dvd.

I am pretty sure any of those ways would copy the ISO file for you.

It took me about 10 min to burn the dvd. So about 30 min total.

    Hope this helps

All the guides you need are on the tab 'Guides' at the top of the afterdawn screen. They are simple to follow and explain most every possible combination of apps you may be using.

The following site also has good guides for dvd ripping/removing protection (dvd decryptor) and shrinking dvd movies to a blank disk (dvdshrink).
