Hi all, I've recently got into the world of DVD back-ups. I've got lots of wonderful advice from these forums, so thank you all (esp. ScubaPete - very informative and helpful posts!) I can rip and burn seemingly sucessfully. After the burn I make sure the verify data option is on. I have also been doing a ScanDisc with Nero DriveSpeed straight after, and that has been confirming 100% good sectors. However - I am having some problems. I've noticed that for many discs, when I do a ScanDisc say a week or so later, it then picks up either damaged or bad sectors. In some cases I haven't used the DVD *at all* in the meantime Why would this be? How is it possible for a DVD to scan 100%, and then the very next time scan with damaged sectors, when it hasn't even been played or touched in the meantime? The only thing I can think of is the dye must be changing after it's been written, however with the MCC discs I'm using I thought they were one of the bext qiality ones? Or is it just Nero DriveSpeed being tempramental? I use DVDShrink 3.2, (DVD Decrypter 3.5.4 if needed first), and burn seperately with Nero. I have Nero 6.6.0.15. I always make sure all other applications are closed down before I burn, and burn using 2x speed (have had same problems on 4x speeds too). I'm using a Plextor 712A with the latest firmware. The current DVD's Im using are Mitsubishi brand, manufactured by MCC which I understand are a excellent brand. (I used to use Imation ((CMC(before I realised how crappy they were after reading the forums!). Running WinXP. Any help or comments would be appreciated. Have a great day! Tony
Hi, welcome. looks like your thread got missed, hence you started that new thread. i've requested that one be closed and will help you out here (as probably will others too now as this thread will be on the first page of the forum as it's been replied to).... let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar. You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"
Hi Creaky, thanks for the reply. Here is the error log (below) - hopefully i've included the right bits. This is an error log from my most recent backup. Although I haven't done a scandisc on this particular burn yet, I am using the same brand of media and haven't changed any settings. Thanks! very odd, it doesn't show what burn speed you used. ah well, here goes... - a-ha, DMA needs to be ON, fix it via this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm - even though those MCC discs are real nice, you're burning too close to outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space. I only use top notch discs and i swear by 4300MB - as i say, very nice discs - looks good..
Your Nero version is also 1 version behind, current version is 6.6.0.16, but I doubt that has anything to do with it.
Thanks for that. I do have DMA enabled, and have checked that previously. But even though that option is set, it seems for some reason when Nero burns, according to the log, it doesn't use that? Is there any setting within Nero that might over-ride the Windows setting? Thanks for the tip about the target size I will try that. BTW - I am burning at 2x, weird the log doesnt show that.
I haven't done any burns since my first post, so the log above is still the most recent one. Is there more bits to the log you would need to see? I've been having a sniff around the internet for info as well, and have read that Windows can automatically disable DMA (and it can't be changed back unless you uninstall/reinstall the drive) if it gets a lot of errors from the drive concerned. Could that be the cause in my case? I'm not sure how to check if that's the fault. In any case, shouldn't I still be able to burn correctly when DMA is off? (albeit slower?)
no you need to fix your DMA settings as described.. then if you realy want to, you could do a 'simulation burn' which goes thru the motions with a blank disc but doesn't actually write to it but will append a log entry to the logfile which you can check the DMA..
OK, uninstalling and then reinstalling the drive was the only way I could get DMA working. I'll try another burn over the weekend and let you know how I get on.
Well I tried anotehr burn over the weekend and it seems sucessful. Log is below. What I don't understand though still is - even with DMA disabled in my earlier attempts, how could a scandisc show 100% correct initially, and then later on give errors? The only thing I could find wrong w/ it is that your Nero is out of date, current version is 6.6.0.18. And you might also want to not multitask while burning.
Thanks for that. I do always make so no other apps are running when I'm burning and don't even touch the computer during that time. I might try getting the latest Nero to see if that makes a difference. Could it be that there was some some of error with the dye on the discs? And that is why initial scandiscs show 100%, but subsequent ones weeks later show errors - that the dye has somehow deteriorated over the days/weeks after burning? Because if there was an error during the initial burn, surely the initial scandisc would have shown errors?
