Just started backing up my DVD collection and have a quick question on converting to another format. Will I lose alot of quality converting DVDs to DivX/XviD, may seem obvious considering the size difference but that is why I am asking. It seems that if I don't lose quality it would make more sense to back them up this way, since I can fit multiple movies on one disc. So I guess my question is are DivX/XviD just better compressions or more compact ones?

You will 100% lose quality since DivX and XviD are both lossy formats. How much depends on your settings. For instance if you encoded at a low fixed quant with a high quality matrix at the original resolution, then the quality would be almost identical. Filesize however would be large.
