can anyone shed light on this??

here's log from latest fail read....

if there are any solutions, please do a step by step guide/instructions.....i.t. is alien territory to me " i know nothing"

    hi...

    - your burner's firmware is out of date, 2.18 is here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1837

    - Nero can't READ from the original disc..

    - Nero's not gonna write much of anything if it can't read the source disc.

i can't see any media details in the log, so let's see exactly which media you have there, download dvd identifier (free) - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm and use it to 'identify' one of those discs, pasting the results here

    hi again creaky,
sorry for delay, everything takes me twice as long cos not yet second nature.

    results of above

copied info to clipboard then can't find clipboard.
    so typed it below

    unique disc identifier:dvd-r
    manuf name;info smart technolo
    manuf id;infosmart02.
    blank disc capacity;2,298,496 sectors=4.71GB(4.38gib)

hi gurnard, thx 4 reply, it looks like a SL to me

    disc itself states bulkpaq 4.7gb

your burner's firmware is out of date, 2.18 is here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1837

will try this if i can get a download somehow, its not doing it at mo

i thought i read somewhere that the o.e.m nero that comes with the burner will only work with that burner, so you don't think that since i've upgraded nero, has not affected the burner???

is nero 6.6 buggy or something? my o.e.m 6.3 seems to work so 100%,yet this paid for version is temperental.

    hi again,

went to burner's manuf for update firmware download, had a look at readme file - full of warnings of it going wrong - feeling queasy at the thought-If i'm brave enough to do it - can anyone do a walk thru of instructions.........below readme file

Pls note following instructions for update procedure:

Connect drive to secondary IDE channel as Master

Disconnect all slave hardware from IDE secondary Master

    Use standard UDMA-2 IDE cable

    Update in Windows "Safe Mode"

Under Windows 2000 & XP login as administrator

Update without DMA mode, under Windows XP & 2000 in the device manager - "IDE ATA/ ATAPI controllers", you can switch from DMA to PIO mode

Disconnect all external USB/ FireWire devices.

Deactivate virusscanners, active desktop programs and packetwriting agents

Do not turn off power during the updating process.

Note: Warranty will be lost during false updating procedure, especially unofficial modified firmwares were used before.
In such cases we could not offer you a solution any more. You have to repair it by cost then.

INSTALLATION: After unzipping file pls. double click on "K251GN81.exe" file, follow instructions.
After, you have to reboot your system.

no need to apologise, take your time...

i'll just comment on the media for now as i gotta get back to work shortly... got a few computer problems, argh!...

    - snippet from here - http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm (not completely up to date but a good reference)

anyway, Bulkpaq don't make discs, they use widely varying quality in manufacturer's discs along with FAKE discs that i myself used 500 of before i wised up to bad media.... i vowed to never buy anything with Bulkpaq's name on - feel free to look thru the 1st link in my signature re Bulkpaq - most of that stuff won't mean much to you, i'm just stressing my point that in my experience, Bulkpaq are to be avoided at all costs (especially your own money costs).

just had a thought, if my prob is just crap media related, does that mean i don't have to update the burner's firmware......cool!

am avoiding the update like the plaque......scares me silly

i use ritek cds&dvds as the norm......so if i keep to my supply...i'll never need to update burner's firmware....correct!?

    - this is what i'm expecting to see in yuor logfile - that 3liner is what Nero shows when the firmware is up to date (for the media in the drive at that time) - or up to date enough i should say.

When the firmware can't recognise the media properly, you just get the first line, ie

......however.......it looks like when you use Nero's copy disk feature, the media info isn't displayed.

....so....anyway....you can sort of escape the firmware problem for now...[bold]if[/bold] whichever new media you buy is supported in your current release of firmware.....so it's a possible temporary reprieve for now :)

    hi creaky again,

okay...okay....i guess updateing is a necessary evil

gonna bite the bullet and attempt my first ever burner firmware update this weekend..........if my pc explodes from it, you'll see pieces of my sotfware splattered all over this forum......

    flattered i'm sure :)

(i'll tell you a secret - it's only cus i hop all over the forums constantly that my reputation precedes me - that's my story anyway)

good luck if you go for the firmware thing - but make sure you read up on it and during update - make sure there's no disc in the drive, don't reset pc or power off (oh and pray for no power cuts for the minute or so it takes)

    catchya later, i'm off home
