thanks i dont know which fixed it but i installed firmware and slowed down the write speed and with the same media it worked. the CD brand is TDK and thats a good brand so i dunno why it didnt work. I have an IBM and the update said for Dell but i updated anyway and no problems. thanks so much for your help
