Hi guys my problem is that after I do an windows xp service pack 2 update my dvd-r drive's name changes to dvd-rw but the problem is that it doesn't read blank dvd's anymore but can read blank cd-r's now i figured out the problem is sp2 pack if i dont have sp2 pack installed it runs fine but everytime after i install sp2 my dvd burner can no longer read blank dvds can you guys help with this. thanks in advance p.s. its a brand new dvd burner so i know its not the burner
can someone please help with my problem does anyone know a solution to this problem any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
SP2 caused some problems like you have with cd and dvd drives. I still haven't installed SP2 and probably never will on my PCs. Most SP2 updates are security issues that can be fixed other ways. I don't need the problems it causes. Try going to your device manager, uninstall the IDE controllers and your burner drives. Then reboot and let Windows reinstall them. That may correct the problems. Good luck. Jerry

Hi ramaq, Are you using Xp Home or Xp Professional??? If you are using Xp Home then upgrade to xp profession will solve all your problems. I have this problems before and after I upgrade to xp professional problem solved.
i'm using xp home damn is there another way to solve the problem without upgrading to professional? if not oh well i guess i will give it a try thanx for the info.....i'll try it out and report back if it works thanks guys for the help thus far
@ramaq First of all, this shouldn't be in here, it should be posted on the "all other topics" instead. I remembered a friend of mine had a similar issue like yours with XP Home Edition, then once he upgraded to XP Pro, the problem was solved for no reason. So, it won't hurt to try you know. I don't know about you, but I have XP Pro with SP2 and I've never experienced such problem with my DVD-Rom drive or DVD burner whatsoever.
Just a question, but have you updated your firmware? I wonder if that might help. I have xp pro sp2 and do not have any issues either.
yes i have my firmware updated i'm going to try installing xp pro as i am usin xp home right now i hope that fixes the problem if not then back to xp home sp1 works fine on there and sorry i didnt know where to post this i am new to these forums but thanx for all the help guys much appreciated

just posting here to tell everyone thanx for helping me out thanks alot guys everything is working fine thanks again for all the help
@Ramaq, can you post what fixed your problem so others will benefit that have similar problems. Its always good to know the final outcome. Jerry
I have a similar problem. I am running windows XP Pro SP2. I recently reformatted and installed all the updates. Now when I try to burn a DVD, the burn fails during the lead-in phase. This occurs with several different burning programs. I never had issues prior to my reformatting. I have heard that one of the recent windows updates is causing problems with DVD burners. Any clue as to my course of action? I have already tried uninstalling the drive and rebooting.
Its the complete SP2 package that usually causes the burner problems on some systems. However, did you reinstall any ASPI layer after the reformat?? I'm pretty sure XP doesn't have one so you usually need to install one to get the burners working properly. Some programs like Nero has its own. Jerry
