Have Nero Software. I have had no problem to date. However I am unable to make a backup of a particular ANIMATED Movie. Error states (as in Log) that there has been a disc check fail:
Compilation cannot be written on that medium type.
(Medium in drive: CD-R. Medium required by compilation: DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R9 Double Layer.)

As this suggests, Do ANIMATED MOVIES as opposed to normal movies require the above specific type discs.

Apologies for my ignorance, I have previously been a bit of a luddite and I am only now being slowly converted to technology.

    Appreciate any help.

hi, apologies for ignorance not necessary, not everyone has to be/wants to be a geek :)

anyway, let's have LAST section of your Nero log, it lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar...

    - too old, update to latest 6.x version - 6.6.0.16, however make sure not to install InCD. see last paragraph...

    - firmware's up to date. good stuff.

    - 512MB is sufficient total memory but you've got none left. make sure to close down more programs prior to all dvd work/burning

    - oops there's a cd in the drive instead of a blank dvd

    - InCD is Nero's horrid 'packet writing' software which tends to interfere. To get rid of it, uninstall Nero, uninstall completely via Nero'd Clean Tools and install the 6.6.0.16 update from http://www.nero.com/en/nero-up.php WITHOUT installing InCD

as to the TDK discs, have to be careful with TDK as they use widely differing quality in disc manufacturers, ie you can get good discs and you can get atrocious discs. after you've applied all suggestions you can always do a 'simulation burn'. (when you go to hit 'burn' make sure to tick 'simulation burn' first). this goes thru the motions of a burn with a blank disc but doesn't write to the disc and produces another logfile entry. Anyway, that logfile entry will show up who actually manufacturered the TDK that you bought (hopefully you bought some good ones). Another way to tell the MID (media code) of the discs (ie who manufactured them) you can download (free) dvd identifier - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm and use it to 'identify' discs. Here's an example of some TDK. the name in brackets is the MID, and those CMC Mag are some of the most foul, atrocious, useless utter rubbish dvd media money can buy - hopefully your's aren't CMC. The reason i won't use TDK is it's in effect a lottery as one day you might get a decent pack of discs, another day you might pick up an identical pack and they'd be made by CMC Magnetics...

    TDK DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
    TDK DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)

    TDK DVD+R 8x (CMC MAG.E01)
    TDK DVD+R 8x (RICOHJPN R02)

Just wanted to say thanks for all your help and advice. Really appreciate it. The log's statement about the wrong type of disc in the driver was completely wrong, but your recommendations about the Update, InCD and the discs were terrrific and much appreciated.

I'm not sure if I will ever turn into a geek, but I am definitely starting to develop personality traits.

Thankyou again for your time and advice.
