I have been burning dvds for about a month only, and recently have been having some problems with it. I use DVDShrink and Nero, which was fine before but all of a sudden I can't burn anything. I've tried all different kinds of media and everything on my burner seems up to date (it is according to live update anyway, i have an i/o magic external burner.) I cleaned the drive several times as well.

I have tried to research using the log file, but I'm not having any luck and was wondering if someone would know what the problem is by looking at it? This site has been sooo helpful to me in beginning dvd burning, I'd be lost without it!

    Anyway, here is the logfile

Usually, a "Power Calibration" error means that your burner has had it. Hopefully, it's not in your case. However, if you've already cleaned the lens and tried other media, it might be pointing that way.

Let's take a look at your log, here's some obvious ones:

    [bold]
    [/bold]

Close all other programs as DVD Shrink's "compressing" stage is very CPU intensive.

    [bold]
    [/bold]

Slow down to 4x or less.

See if any of these suggestions work, post back with results.

    Good Luck!

Well, I tried what you suggested and still no luck!

Maybe it is my burner :(

Ughhhh....I just got it a couple months ago! Hopefully I still have my receipt around here...

When I put the blank in, it takes forever to read the disc and makes a lot of noises, so it definitely sounds like it isn't working.

Any recommendations on a better one?

Since everyone has their own opinions as to what's the best dvd burner to get, I can only offer you guidelines.

First off, you have to make sure that the one you have still has a warranty (better look for that receipt). Maybe you can take it back and they can fix it for you, or better yet, they can get you a whole new one.

Secondly, if you're going to look into buying a new one, make sure you've done your comparison shopping. If you're looking online, I usually check out newegg.com, it has a user rating system that can give you a better idea of the product you're looking to purchase.

Finally, just because it's a "good" deal (i,e cheap) doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing. Again, see how previous buyers rate it and what were the pro's and con's. What features you can and can't live with.

I know these are just general instructions that you've already thought about, but you'll be surprised at how people's common sense go out the window when it comes to shopping (gadgets or otherwise).

If anything, just do a search in the forums. Look up "dvd burner" or something to that effect, I'm sure you'll get a couple of hits.

    Good Luck!
