Getting Dolby Surround from avi through spdif

    Hi
Is it possible to get a Dolby signal to my Onkyo receiver from an avi file playing on my PC through a spdif connection?

I currently have movie avi files playing from my PC to my entertainment center nicely through a video breakout box and spdif from my Audigy. But I've really been trying to figure out how to, if it is possible to get a Dolby signal from these files and pass it through to the receiver so I can get the surround effects.

Are these divx and xvid files carrying a Dolby signal? Are others running a setup like this and getting surround?

If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.

    Thanks
    Randy

I have a similar problem. My motherboard came with a S/PDIF out card, but I don't know how to get 5.1 out of it. When I configure to put 5.1 out the mic/out/in phono jacks, I'm sure that I'm getting 5.1 channels out from my avi's. But with that configuration, I can't figure out how to get enough amplification in my signal. I have to turn my receiver all the way up and then there's a lot of hiss and it doesn't sound that great.
I would really like to find out how to send a 5.1 signal from the optical S/PDIF output, similar to the signal my DVD player or PS2 sends.

I'm sure my system is able to do 5.1, and I'm sure it's able to send digital audio signals through the optical out jack. Seems like there would be a way to send 5.1 digital, so the signal could be processed by my nice new receiver instead of by my 4 year old motherboard.

But I figured out how to get my computer to boost the analog coming out of my phono jacks so my receiver isn't amplifying a really weak signal. it sounds pretty decent now.
