Hey Guys, first time here. Seems like a good site so far.
Her's my question, How long does it take to copy a entire DVD, average.
I'm asking because i'm averaging 2hrs. 1 hr to copy and 1 hr to burn. is this normal?

What speed are you burning at and what what kind of software, another thing is what are you comp's specs. It'll take me 30-60 mins and I have all the quality setting set to give me the best qualities. I burn at 6x but only b/c I can't burn at 2x. 4x is what everybody here will agree on.

On AVERAGE - between 20 - 40 minutes total process - this includes the decryting stage and the actually burning stage.

Like you asked this is AVERAGE - depends on the disks being backed up - the more junk on the disk the longer decrytion stage may take - a 3 hour movie w/ all the extras could easily take 30-40 mins to decrypt - however - I usually am not going to want to compress a whole disk that large.

The burning stage - burned at 4x is about 15minz, 8x is about 7/8 minz - most ppl prefer to burn at 4x - causes less problems.

Now lets talk about how long its taking you - do you know if you are woriking in DMA mode?????

Do you know how to check this to ensure the drive is not reading at PIO mode?

    --------

I will tell you how to check this ....

    -------------------------

    START
    Control Panel
    Performance & Maintenance
    System
    Hardware tab
    (click on) Device Manager
    Click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

CLICK ON EACH PRIMARY and EACH SECONDARY IDE CHANNELS and follow these next instructions for each

    channel:
    Advanced Settings
(check yo see if you are operating in DMA mode)
If you see any that say PIO mode - CHANGE TO DMA

    Then press "OK"

    They are all DMA.
So when you say junk on a disk, you mean those little pictures and files and programme that aren't necessary on my disk could slow it down? well as i type this, i'm deleting these type of files.
I intend to buy some more memory for my computer. i have 304 now, but i'm gonna bring it up to 516mb.
It took me 1hr 20 mins to COPY THE IMAGE from a DVD. Then another 1hr to burn it.
You know what, as i think of it, using nero 6, there is an option to "Copy the DVD using recode, and that has a screen that shows the movie a bit faster than normal play.
So it's almost like the time it takes to copy the imageis almost the time it takes to watch the movie.

Hope you can pick some sense out of what i said.
    Thanks Guys.

Another thing that will slow you down are sbyware and malware, so download Ad-Aware from lavasoft. You will have to download it of of downloads.com. Also run diskclean up to get rid of some unwanted things from the temporary internet file. And DEFRAG your HD. I defrag mine after every burn. the Winodows defrag program is kinda sucky (trying not to cus), you so can try Perfect disk. It has a 30 day free trial.

I don't really know about teh MS thing, Ad-Aware is highly reagarded by anyone who uses it, and they update every week or so. You should jsut try it,even if you have another spyware prog. b/c somethings won't pick up on everything. I know when i run Spybot Doc. I still get about 8 things found by Ad-aware and vice versa. First time I ran ad-aware i got about 80 criticals. No we don't get paid, and if anyone did it wouldn't be me, I don't know anywhere near as much as teh addicts and and Senior members. I've meet plenty of members who know more than me, and even some juniors, there are probably a few hundred ppl here who know more than me. But I DO think taht some of teh ppl here deserve to get paid for all teh things they do.

If you are using shrink and things are going slow. This thread at another site covers encode times:
    http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=47035
The guy who made shrink now works for Nero and made Recode 2. I am starting to like it better than shrink, just because it can do the encoding faster. As posted, the more compression you are doing, the longer it takes to get to the burn process. If you are using Nero, a post of your burn log would tell us much. [bold]Just edit out your serial number from the log when you post.[/bold] It can be found in program files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt
Nero keeps track of all your burns whether they are good or bad. Burn logs also display conficts in your system. I think shrink has a log also, but i don't know where it hides right now.

    Lectro -

As mentioned earlier - Ad-ware by lavasoft is a good program - also it is FREEWARE.

    ----

When I said junk on the disk - I meant - menus, extra, previews, etc. HOWEVER - you are still in the right direction w/ other "junk running in background" so that is still important also.

You mentioned something about needed to upgrade your memory - that could definitely be the culprit.

All the things that each of us have mentioned can help you in the long run.

As far as our posts. I dont know about ppl getting paid - but most of us are here to help others and sometimes get help when we need it to. As anywhere - some ppl know more than others. There are certain issues that I know like the back of my hand, some I have a decent amount of knowledge about and some stuff I just dont know zilch! But I will respond to any post where I believe my input can be helpful. Sometimes its the small stuff that works - sometimes it gets real technical. That is the wonderful thing about so many different minds being involved.

    -------------------

Maxburn - I thought I saw somebody saying recode was made by the same person as shrink - NO WONDDER they look so much alike. I am really starting to get into my nero recode - it does seem to process faster - easy to use - and using shrink for so long makes it that much easier. I have had Nero for a long time and just been sitting there *L*
