Hello, This is my first post here, though I've been reading for quite a few months. I'm having a consistent problem in burning DVD's regardless of the software I use (I have both CloneDVD2 version 2.8.5.1 and DVD Shrink, as well as AnyDVD v 5.5.1.1). Here's what happens. When I started burning DVD's it worked perfectly on multiple media for a couple weeks, then stopped working. It would burn between 60 and 95% and then fail due to "bad media". I resolved it the first time by flashing my drive from a Philips to a Benq 1620. That resolved the problem beautifully and it was like I had a brand new DVD writer. I burned for a couple weeks, and suddenly it starts happening again. I'm currently using Verbatim 16X disks. (On Sale at Office Depot for $35/100 BTW!!). It's not title specific, and I'm capable of creating about one successful burn out of about 6 attempts...that's a lot of coasters! I've been playing with this thing for a week and cant seem to resolve the issue. Any ideas would be helpful! Wojo
Can you post a log file? What speed are you burning at? Are you multi tasking? Sounds like you got the right programs, but something is messing you up. Do you get the DVD's ripped to the HD successfully? Is the problem durring the burn?
I'm currently attempting a burn from saved hard drive files using CloneDVD, it's at 76% at the moment, if it fails I'll post the log file. I'm burning at "Maximum" in CloneDVD (which is 16X). I've also tried slowing it down to 4X, but it didn't resolve the problem. I'm multitasking only in this forum and my email program is running. I've shut down AVG virus and most other programs unrelated to copying (AnyDVD is running). Yes, it's burning fine to the HDD, it's only the burn that's causing the problem, frustratingly often when it's nearly complete. I had one burn yesterday that actually got to 100% and failed during the write-out.
Oddly, the last attempt worked! It only took 5 failures to make one backup (thank goodness I got such a good deal on the disks). I'm going to attempt another one, this time using DVD decrypter to rip the image to the HDD and then CloneDVD to put it on disk. It seems the only successes I've had have been ripping from files on the HDD, rather than going immediately to burn it after creating the backup (both in Shrink and Clone). I've never tried using DVD Decrypter to backup to hard drive before, but I saw it in the tutorial and thought I'd give that a shot. If (when) it fails I'll post the log.
I would recommend not multi-tasking during the burn. I am sure that others here will have opinions as well, and I never burn over 4x as that caused me problems. Are you setting your target size? Maybe you are burning too close to the edge.
Now there's a new one to me...Is this something I do in Decrypter or Clone? It has occurred to me that it may simply be too large. Should I aim for a flat 4600?
In CloneDVD you can set it where the box(normally says DVD5)(trying to remember the screen) is to the left of the progress window. Click on it and it should allow you to set the size. I would only go about 4360 max. In shrink go to edit>preferences>and on the preferences tab click the target size down arrow and select "custom" and type in 4300.
I don't know if this is the reason, but I finally made a good copy of Jaws, which was one I was having really serious concerns about and was about to give up on and make a rule that only I handle the original. In order to keep the quality at a decent level I had to put the behind the scenes extra feature on a second disk, but it's working. I'm hoping leaving that setting at 4360 will cure my woes. Now I'm wondering if, given that I already have AnyDVD installed, I'm wasting time using DVD decrypter to rip the files to my HDD instead of just using CloneDVD in conjunction with AnyDVD? It seems like using DVD Decrypter is an extra step that takes an extra 20-30 minutes for no real reason. Is there an advantage to first ripping with Decrypter?
