dkmopq decided to replace the links I removed as well as remove the line I added saying I'd done so. For that he's been banned and I'll be taking down any and every guide he's posted.

This is an excellent guide - it is great to see newbies making such a fantastic contribution!
Now, people. There are 2 guides for converting to ipod. Mine (which has been revised) and this brilliant one here.
They are both clear and well explained and they all work so read them carefully and then you be fine. If you cannot get it to work, move on to the next one) And between us here, there are about 5 or 6 different methods to try. So you must be able to do it.
Actually read the guides through to the end so you get a good idea of what you are doing. dont just use the links, install and then complain that it doesn't work - they all work, but only when used properly.
@dkmopq once again, this is fantastic. you will last a long time in these forums with inputs like this. Welcome ;)

Great Idea. Though I think you should just add the mac bit onto your guide rather than make a whole new one! ;)

Just updated a problem iPod users maybe encountered. As follows
If during the converting period, an error message came up that said you did not have some DivX Pro codec supported software installed and refused to go any further, please download the free DivX codec from and install. After installing, run the DVD to iPod converter, click "Settings -> Output settings", choose "DivX 6.0 codec" from "Codec", and click "Ok", then start converting.

ydkjman,
I just converted a WMV video file (30.1MB), the conversion lasted about 2 minutes. No error message appeared.
I have sent a private message to u. Please send your wmv file to me, I will test it. :-)

alright here goes, i just purchased the full version of this software, and understand what your saying, but cant get that far, i am getting an error message the moment i open the dvd from the file menu, 2 error messages arrive, and are back to back, for each chapter of the movie such as each preview, and then the widescreen version, and full screen version, so say there is 7 parts to the dvd, and each part brings up 2 error messages apiece. any idea how to fix this, i have already downloaded the codec like you suggest, and that has no affect on this error. Help?

HELP! - Can I use the suggested method below with VIDEO_TS. VOB files I burned to my harddrive using DVD Decrypter? There are many . VOB files in my VDEO_TS folders. I have already tried Cucusoft iPod Movie Converter, Ultra Video Splitter and ImTOO iPod Movie Converter and no luck. I downloaded K-Lite codec Pack for Ultra Video Spliter as well.
Any ideas?

this is one thing I know your going to run into and that is when you rip a dvd to your hard drive if the FAT table is set to 32 your only going to be able to have files about 1.4 gig in size. So even if you choose not to spit the movie you will stop right in the middle once you hit that size of file.
NTFS will let you have files bigger than the 1.4 so you could rip your movie and have it 1 file size about 6-7 gigs.
Thus when you convert you have 1 movie file and not the 4 that you would have converted individually.

Sweet, I got it to work. I grabbed the biggest VOS_2_1. VOB file in the directory, assuming this was the actual movie, and it worked like a champ. Converted to MPEG4, dropped in iTunes and done.

Update a FAQ:
Q: Why occour a message: "MPEG2Dec: Error during decoder initialisation" or "unable to read from E:\VIDEO_TS\vts_01_1.vob" everytime I convert dvd to iPod?
A: First, Check that you select the correct DVD driver. If not, please select the correct DVD driver path.
Second, It may because that your DVD disc is from a region limited by your DVD-ROM. You may try to install a DVD region free software to make your DVD-ROM can read the DVD disc. You can download DVD Region Killer from http://www.goripper.com/codec/SetupRegKill2702.exe ,it is free. If it doesn't work, get the shareware "DVD Region+CSS Free".
Software information
DVD Region Killer enables you to play DVD titles made for different regions on your PC, without the hassle to switch the region of your Windows operating system and/or the region of your DVD player software back and forth.
DVD Region+CSS Free allows you to watch and copy DVD from any region on all DVD drives. It also removes DVD encryption.

I know this is off topic a little but when i use Videora or PSP Video9 to convert files like the.simpsons.1703.pdtv. AVI or The.Devils.Rejects.DVDrip. XviD-xV
after is converted i try to drag the the converted file to itunes but i get a windows error and itunes just closes out. I've had my ipod video for about 2 weeks and i still cant put videos on it because of this, i already tried to put uninstall and reinstall every thing but i get the same results.

wjason777, can you play the files with Quicktime Player?
As usual, after ripping your dvd/video to ipod mp4 files, the files can be played with Quicktime player and itunes 6.
I have googled the error, but can not find the right answer. Could you post the error message here?

cucusoft dvd to ipod converter is easier-to-use and less expensive than other software. The trial version can only convert 3-minutes video.
Just tested the conversion speed, it is slower than pq DVD to iPod video converter. But pq costs $5 more. If you are not satisfied with the converting speed, download pq dvd to ipod converter from http://www.goripper.com/download/pqdvd_ipod.rn.exe to try out. The trial version of pq can convert 5-minutes video files.
