CloneDVD2

The DVD media field where you select DVD+R DL, DVD-5, DVD RAm, Custom, it does not give DVD+R as a choice for single layer. Each time I selected DVD+R DL to copy a movie it would say source is to large - destination being a DVD+R single layer disk. I just backed up Gladiator and selected Custom with 4700MB for the size, is this the same thing as DVD+R single layer?

 

Yes it is, sort of. The DVD-5 setting is the one you want. That is DVD+R single layer. At 4700MB, this would exceed the capacity of the disc. DVD disc manufacturers love to use marketing terms and sell their discs as 4.7GB discs (4700MB), but this is not true -- the 4.7GB is calculated by using so-called "Japanese gigabytes", where the power of calculations is 1,000 instead of 1,024 (and 1,024 is the correct way to calculate everything in computer world -- so, 1024 megabytes == 1 gigabyte). DVD-5 is an acronym that means a DVD disc that is one-sided single-layer disc and can contain upto 4.38 gigabytes of data on it.

No, it refers to the format of the disc not the size. The size is referred to as DVD5 or DVD9 which is a dual layer.

In cloneDVD you notice that:

This sets the target size for your backup. I use a custom setting as I do not want to burn too close to the edges of the disc that I am using, which causes freezes, pixelation, staggers, etc., even though I use high quality discs and probably would get away with using DVD5 setting. I set my setting in CloneDVD to 4360. My discs play flawlessly.

Now

this happens because you are telling cloneDVD that you don't want to compress the movie and the media in the tray is only DVD5. Were you to put in a DL DVD9 disc you should not get an error saying the source is too large.

 

Every time I try to burn a DVD, I get an error message saying that that the operation failed. I have the DVD media field set to DVD-5 and am using a DVD+R disc. Below is the message:

writing to media was not successful:

media write error

A write error has occured, probably caused by a bad media.

Please replace the media and try again.

I don't have a DVD+5 setting. My only options are DVD-5, DVD+R DL, Mini DVD, DVD Ram and custom.

 

Its telling you you have poor quality blank media. What brand are the blanks you have??

I am using TDK DVD-R's. They are 4.7GB and have a write speed of 8x.
Do you recomend trying DVD+R DL?

 

The TDK disc ur using is of poor quality. You can use the +R DL but it's not necessary. What you want is better quality disc. Most in this forum recommend Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim or RiTEK/RiDATA. There's a sale on Ritek at http://www.meritline.com for 100pk of 8x DVD-R $29.99. Take a look. In CloneDVD, the DVD-5 setting is only stating the size, not indicating that the blank has to be DVD-R media. I use this setting all the time and use DVD+R media exclusively. [bold]Use the setting "Custom" and set the target size to 4360[/bold] and try a burn with your TDK's. Now I would recommend that you get better media as the program itself, according to the error message you provided, is telling you that it is bad media. [bolt]IMPORTANT[/bold] Lower your burn speed to 4x, no faster. You have the option in cloneDVD to do this and the default is maximum which will definately cause errors on poor media.

Read the guide in my signature specific to CloneDVD. If you follow those instruction you will be burning without errors shortly.

Media recommendations are Taiyo Yudens, Verbatims, Maxells and believe it or not Office Depot Brand (they id as Ritek R03-02's, excellent)They are on sale this week for 24.99 for cake box of 50, buy 1 get one free. I did last night. :-}

Try this and post back. You should also check the firmware on your burner to make sure that it is up to date.

I use Office Max brand DVD+R at 8x with no problem. Since I understand how to set the media type to DVD-5 or Custom, CloneDVD2 works great

Congrats. Once you get the hang of it it is relatively easy. Lots to learn though.

 

buning with my TDK's on 4x failed. Same error. I'm picking up some better DVD's to night and will try again.

Buning with the +R DL's resulted in the same error message. I used Memorex DVD's. Could my problam be my DVD drive?

 

I have read through threads but what type, brand and model burner are you using? Can you post a log of your last burn.

 

@eparker89, You probably still have poor quality blank media. Memorex isn't a very good choice because they put the memorex name on blanks from many different manufacturers. TY, Verbatim, or Ritek are a few of the better brands to buy.
