can a person combine 2 avi files in divxtodvd (free version) like you can in DVDSanta. If you have an avi file that is a resolution of
608x336 should you encode it in wide screen or normal, what would the difference be please?

    Hi there,

With the Freeware version, open the 1st file.
Then click on the open again, and select the 2nd file.

    You should see: File1.avi ; file2.avi

It will convert both files (File1, then file2) in the order loaded.

Unless you have a Widescreen TV, I would pick Normal.

It's been so long since I used the Freeware version :)

The shareware version let's you choose AUTO, I let the software choose.

Do you have Auto available on the freeware version ?

On the shareware version, if you force a 4:3 file to convert in Widescreen, it just tells the software you will watch this on a Widescreen TV, so it will add 2 large black blocks on each side, you you can watch the movie UNSTRECHED on your 16:9 TV.

If you choose 4:3 and watch it on a 16:9 TV, it will fill the screen but strech the image to fill the screen.

It's all a matter of choice.

As for combing the files into one, yes DivxToDvd will do that. And as for the resolution question I think if you were to leave the default setting on auto you'd be fine but you could experiment by forcing the aspect ratio to 16:9(wide) or 4:3(full).
