Can someone pleeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaase help me. I feel like maybe I'm at my wits end. I can't offer much in return but I would be greatly appreciative to anyone kind enough to help. I have many issues but they all concern the same thing: burning an avi file to a DVD.

by the way I run Mac OSX G5 10.4 and have toast 6, dvd2onex, and ffmegx.

    first, is it possible?

second, I have an avi file that is 700 MB and I tried to burn it to a DVD in the video section of Toast 6, but it said the file was too big. I have DVD2onex but it won't let me choose the avi file to compress...is there any other way to compress this? I then read somewhere that I can "save it as disc image and then mount it in toast and the computer will think I inserted a DVD, at which point I can compress it.

first problem with that, I don't understand what I'm supposed to do...I tried to save it as disc image but then what does it mean to "mount it" and how do I do that? And how do I know whether it saved as a "disc image" or not.

Of course the other problem is that I read even if that does work, I have to have a DVD player that plays AVI's which mine probably doesn't...is this true as well?...which brings me to the next issue

Third, am I supposed to convert the avi into something else? (i think I heard someone say mpeg2 or something) BUT even if I do that will be able to compress it in dvd2onex? will I need to? if I do need to convert it, is ffmpegx all i need to do it? if so what is the next step?

i understand this is probably a really annoying post...if all these questions weren't answered I wouldn't blame you...but can anyone help with any of them? even if they weren't all answered can someone at least tell me the easiest way to get from point A to point b. Thanks a lot

There is also a forum headed DVD ripping with Mac...may be some threads there that can help.

You should convert the .avi file to .mov, best program to use for that is Final Cut Pro, you'll probably have to take a couple of years to render it several times and stuff, I've tried it but the file I converted kept hanging so can't guarantee that it will work. If you use this make sure your settings are at DV Pal48 or DVNTSC, depending where you are and size 720 x 586, anamorphic for widescreen if that's what it is. Macs can play avi but simply don't like working with the avi format, I have never been able to encode avi on a mac. Once it's in a mov format there's no trouble anymore, toast will encode it without hassle but iDVD or DVD studio pro are better as they produce better visual quality after encoding. DVD2one is not designed to create DVDs from scratch. iMovie is a stripped down version of Final cut pro that's on all macs if you don't have it or can't get it, you can try converting it with the same settings if it allows you to work with avi. Or do it all on a PC if it's possible, seriously it will be much less agro. It worth noting too macs have issues playing mov files created on PCs.

Best of luck and try not too pull to much of your hair out, mine's just growing back now.
