Hi Everyone I am an IT person - but very very new to video. I have a 65mb AVI file which I'd like to crop, basically delete some stuff at the start and at the end. Not sure if this is superfluous information, but I do have aan XviD mpeg4 codec installed. I don't know what system generated the AVI, but the following file details are captured from VirtualDub 1.6.11: Frame size : 640x480 25.00 fps Length : 8382 frames 5:35:28 Decompressor: XviD MPEG 4 Codec # key frames: 84 (more data if required) I have tried using VirtualDub to crop the top and tail of the clip (which I seem to have managed) but I can't seem to save the file as anything useable. When it starts to save - the projected file size is 2723.xxMB (way too big for a cropped 65MB file, so I'm guessing it's saving in full AVI format?) so I stop it. And when I play the resultant file in Windows Media Player, it displays a single frame / still. Clearly I am doing something basic wrong as I do not have experience with video editing / codecs / etc etc I would appreciate some help if someone can spare me the time. Thanks Phil (p.s. Set the video to direct streaming and it will resave it unchanged. You can however only cut on keyframes. So if there is no keyframe where you want to cut, you need to re-encode at least that section.
Thanks for that. I know about key frames, so I know that i'm cropping in the right places. I managed to save the file - it reports being 2:04 minutes long, which sounds about right, and the filesize is now down to 24MB, which also sounds about right. Problem now is that there's no video displayed in WMPlayer. It's just a black screen - and it only seems to play for about 2-3 seconds. Any more ideas? Thanks
