Allo people,

Have this problem where using the same software and same media as I had burned at 4 speed previously, I am only age to burn at 1 speed now.

Software - Nero 6.6.0.3 (dvd shrink is used to rip the files but have tired with nero only and same issue.)

drive - Pioneer 105

Media - Rivision DVD-R 4X 4.7GB 120 min

Opperating system - Xp Sp 2 (All up to date.)

AV - AVG free edition.

When I try to burn at the higher speed I get the error below. Could anyone help me out please?

Hey,

Update.

Burned a disk at 1 speed and the disk says it is written on but has used 0 space and has nothing on it.

Also I tested out burning a CD-r... this worked fine (Just burned a backup for my college work... not much like 50 Megs.)

So... DVD writing failed but cd writing working fine.

Went to the pioneer site and found latest drivers was going to overwrite the autoexec.bat etc but before it could complete came up with following error

______________________< ERROR >_______________________

There is no MSCDEX.EXE.
Copy it to the boot drive from the DOS disk.
______________< Quit for ERROR >______________

Exit for error.
If you have confirmed, press the SPACE key.
______________________________________________

Searched my PC and no such file around. What do I do from here?

Your Nero is behind by a few versions. The current version is 6.6.0.16

Your DMA is off here is how you can turn it back on:

((To enable DMA back ON by "uninstalling" it's driver “for Win XP users”))

A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER", left click on "PROPERTIES"
B) left click on "HARDWARE", left click on "DEVICE MANAGER"
C) left click on + sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives
D) double left click on your DVD burner or your dvd-rom drive
E) left click on "DRIVER", left click on "UNINSTALL", you will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system", just click "OK", now "SHUTDOWN" or "restart" your computer
F) once you restart your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner’s drive and re-install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!!

NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "uninstall" it from the “IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers”

(A) left click on + sign of "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers"
(B) double left click on either Secondary or Primary IDE Channel (burner's driver are usually "Secondary Channel")
(C) click on "DRIVER", "UNINSTALL", "OK" and then "shutdown" or "restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!!
***NOTE: you have to know where your "DVD Burner" or "DVD-ROM drive" is installed to what Channel). Usually it's the "Secondary IDE Channel" because your "C: drive or Hard Drive" would be the main aka Primary IDE Channel already. If you're not sure, then you need to check it with "Nero Toolkit" first before you "uninstall" any of them. Once you verify with Nero Toolkit, then you can continue with the above steps.

You are writing too close to the edge, here is how you can fix that, I am assuming that you are using shrink:
In shrink got to Edit>Preference>in the first tab scroll down in box to 'custom'> then in the box beside it type in 4300.

Try that :D

Yep, that was written by me. Anyways, I've updated with the fancy pictures now, so it'll be super easy to follow.

@alkohol

Yeah that really is a great guide, I copied and pasted it from some other guy who posted it, I think it was MaxBurn. Kinda makes me seem lazy doesn't it. I can't even take the time to type out my own response and you take the time to put pictures in and improve it. lol

KEY_HARDWARE_ERROR indicates that the target detected a non-recoverable hardware failure while performing the command or during a self test.

Think your burner might be on its way out.

- burner's firmware is up to date

- as your burner is internal to the PC, that question mark is saying your ATAPI drivers still aren't loaded correctly, try to fix via this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

- DMA needs to be ON, it will be fixed via following the above link

- 4464MB is burning too close to outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space

- the ATAPI drivers are supposed to be listed in this section, this will be sorted by following the DMA fix above

Hello all, Trickyd I had the same prob awhile back and it had me baffled for ages. Turned out what I had to do was uninstall nero from the add and remove programmes and then do a search on my pc, just type in nero. And then delete everything that comes up in your serch under nero. Then re-install nero, and hopefully you get no error.

Righty,

ATAPI drivers are not updated....

DMA is showing as on for the writer...

Have uninstalled nero, searched PC and removed everything to do with nero... reinstalled nero 6 Ultra edition.

Now I still get errors... Going to try a new drive next. Anything else I can do?

Well you still haven't updated your Nero, and now it's 6.6.0.18. And you are still writing too close to the edge. And you didn't do what Alkohol and I told you to do about that DMA. Why did you only turn on the DMA for your writer but not your other drive, the LG one.

Quite right, I didn't update my nero... I actually uninstalled it, removed all traces of it... and installed it again.

It worked fine before so no reason to say why it would not work better now. Also, I tried to upgrade to the new version with much problems actually, I have spent the time from when I last posted until now fixing the mess that caused... So, I will be staying away from later versions of Nero for the time being.

Only turned on the DMA for the Pioneer one as it is the only one involved, I saw little point in turning on DMA on a seccondary drive which had absolutely nothing to do with the process, but then I will do that if you think it will make a difference.

Yeah, with the burning too close to the edge... fair comment. I was just trying to burn an image I previously used dvd shrink to backup which I no longer have in my possession... but I will try another backup with the changes above.

I really appreciate your help like guys and didn't mean to upset you, I know I am running on goodwill here and the last thing I want is to P you off.

I see your point in only changing your Pioneer's DMA but aren't you using the other drive to rip the movie? This will make your rip time decrese so why not?

The DVD rom is a very recent addition to my PC to be honest. Before now I always used the one drive. I had bought the drive a wee while back but never installed it until recently.

Ok, so this time I have done everything as above... I even did risk updating Nero and thankfully all went ahead fine.

I used the new sony drive to rip things and also decreased the amount of the disk that nero was to write too. Unfortunately, still an error.

I am going to leand another dvdr drive from a mate of mine, is there anything else I could realistically try before hand?

I honestly don't know why you would want to burn above 4x but w/e. read temj's post, that might be it.
