    Hi nooner44

    Welcome to the forums. One of the easiest solutions to your question is to download two free programs DVDdecrypter and DVDshrink, and while you are at it get DVDFab decrypter as well. They are available off of the software page on this site or from http://www.filepedia.com

    Then visit the link in my signature for DVDdecrypter and shrink and follow the procedure step by step and you will be backing up your dvd's in no time.

    Get quality media such as Taiyo Yudens, Verbatims, Maxells, Sony, Fuji (made in Japan media preferred) DVD+R 8x is what I use.

    Do not get Memorex media. Very poor quality and your backups will suffer.

    Feel free to post any questions that you have.

    @nooner44

    Go here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/256436 -- it's a pretty sweet and super easy guide that I recently wrote just for Newbies. Yes, DVD Decrypter is free and you can download it at the link below (from this site). Enjoyed it.

    I have only two things to add.
    1: DVD+R burn faster than DVD-R, but not everyone's DVD player will read DVD+R. You may want to experiment with your home DVD player before you stock up on one or the other. I personally use DVD-R because the copies I make can be played on most of my friends DVD players.

    2: I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU GET AnyDVD from Slysoft.com. I have a $150 copy of DVDXCOPY Platinum, DVD Decrypter, DVDFab Decrypter, DVD Shrink, DVD43, but didn't want to spend $39 on AnyDVD. My DVDXCOPY copies all the older movies with ease. The newer movies have newer encryptions, and I have been trying different combinations of products to get a movie like "Bewitched" copied. This morning I finally bought AnyDVD and ran it in the background while I used DVD Shrink to copy and burn Bewitched. What I spent hours trying before took 15 minutes with AnyDVD. It's the best money I have spent on software.

    Slysoft.com has a special promotion that ends today NOVEMBER 15 for afterdawn members who want to purchase AnyDVD or their other ripping software. Type "afterdawn" in the promotion/coupon box during the ordering process and you get $10 off, making it $29!! DVD43 (freeware) is a similar product that runs in the background but it doesn't work with some of the newer movies.

    AnyDVD, DVD Shrink and DVDFab Decrypter are my new 3 programs of choice as of today. Up until today I used DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter with DVD43, with mixed results. Good luck.
