    - looks like this drive is yours further down this page - http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/FirmwareDownload.html - and your firmware is up to date

    - DMA needs to be ON, fix via this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

    - oh God, you're using some of the most awful, atrocious utter rubbish dvd media there is. get decent media, and glance at my signature for reasons not to use CMC media

    - see previous comment

    - your ATAPI drivers aren't listed here, the DMA fix above will sort this out

    So... your problems are down to crap media and DMA being OFF. crap media such as that are the things that make your devices drop out of DMA into PIO mode...

    [bold]I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Primary and Secondary IDE Drives...this is what happened...

    PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL
    Device 0-Ultra DMA MODE 5
    Device 1-Pio Mode

    SECONDAR IDE CHANNEL
    Device 0-Ultra DMA MODE 2
    Device 1-Not applicable

    Looks like it still hasnt switch over to the DMA mode on for the primary IDE channel for device 1, even though i det it to switch to dma if available and uninstalled and reinstalled both IDE channels....any other ideas on how I can get the DMA on????
    Thanks for the help.[/bold]

    Problem: NERO 6 FREEZES AT LEAD IN

    And I mean freezes, must reset and the history file isn't even updated!
    I want to burn a 2.7g to verbatim dvd. I don't think it matters what I'm trying to burn, Nero is suddenly unable to burn dvds. It burns cds fine. My DMA is on, installed aspi drivers, i already run the zapper for incd and roxio, already uninstalled, zapped and reinstalled nero. still freeezes.

    It suddenly started to happen 3 weeks ago. Could it be a windows update?? I know i don't have a log, but can anyone help (my HD is full!)???

    @Jaco82 - re the lead-in errors, see here - http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=155492 (they link back here to afterdawn. see if they help. but as the HD being full - erm you'd best address before you do anything else or you'll never burn diddly squat!

    @waterlog
    When you say you tried uninstalling and re-installing the slave drive, did you mean uninstalled and re-booted to let Windows re-install it?

    @creaky
    Tentatively.. since the drives are on the same cable would that not indicate that the cable was o.k. ?

    @waterlog, if you want to open up the PC to check cables, may as well interchange the HD cable and the DVD writer cable to verify?

    @attar - i know..just clutching at straws at the moment (or IDE ribbon cables) as don't see why the DMA fix isn't 'fixing'

    :)

    Do the PC bios settings (should be "automatic"? in this case) for the device, control the ultimate settings viz PIO DMA or does Windows decide, when it finally kicks in, that the device should be set appropriately?

    In my case, as the PC powers up,(long before Windows starts)I press the 'DEL' key and the bios menu comes up.

    Seems to me it was the cable.
    If it were 40 pin, I don't think DMA would ever turn on.
