This guide shows how to convert DVDs to AVI, MPEG etc. I used ImTOO DVD RIpper. If there is anything wrong, please let me know. I'd like to communicate with you guys. Come on!
1. Download ImTOO DVD Ripper at http://www.imtoo.com/downloads/dvd-ripper.exe and run ir. Then load DVD. Please choose "Open DVD" in the File menu or directly press the "DVD" button in the main interface, then select your DVD Drive in the pop-up window and press the "OK" button.
2. After you successfully load the DVD, the DVD info is displayed in the left window. Sometimes some chapters/episodes hide in another index, you can change an index in "Index" dropdown box to load these chapters/episodes.
3. You can select the audio track for the target files in the "Audio" combo-box in the Input area.
4. You may edit ID3 tag by entering the info in the "Genre", "Album", "Artist" and "Year" boxes. MP3 format supports ID3 tag while Wave format doesn't.
5. Select the target audio format in the "Format" combo-box in the Output area. If you choose "MP3 (*.mp3)" as the output format, DVD Audio Ripper allows you to specify the audio quality by clicking the "Settings" button. In general, you'd better keep the default value, that's enough to reserve wonderful audio quality.
6. In general, DVDs are ripped by chapters. Especially to music DVDs, a chapter is a song. If you prefer to split DVD audio tracks by certain file size, please select "Custom Size" in the "Volume Size" box. You may enter the specifying number by clicking "Settings" button. The default is "5 MB".
If you want to rip by certain duration, please select "Custom time", you may enter the specifying number by clicking "Settings" button (the default is 3 minutes).
7. You may specify the output path by clicking "Browse..." button or directly entering a file path in the "Path" box at the bottom of the Output area.
8. With all settings being properly done, click the "Rip and Encode All" button in the main interface or choose "Encode" in the File menu to start ripping.
If you want to encode certain chapter, please select the chapter to highlight it, then choose "Encode Current Selection" in the File menu.
If you want to encode from a specific starting point, firstly, you must change "Volume Size" to "Custom size" or "Custom Time", then choose "Encode From Current Position" in the File menu.
If you want to encode a segment, please choose "Encode Segment" in the File menu, then enter the beginning time and the duration of the clip. For example, you want a clip from 00:20:20 to 00:35:00, you should enter From 00:20:20 and the Length is 00:14:40, after that, click the "Encode" button.
9. After the file is successfully ripped, you may click the "Open Folder" button to browse the output files.

I have that program also, but i was wondering if i can convert the dvd movie to a single AVI file, or other video file (its a simple 2 chapter dvd (the first chapter i dont even want, but i know how to do that.) Im plaing to convet the dvd to a single file (even if i have to rip multi files together) to play on my xbox threw xbox media center (it cant play a dvd like a dvd player yet, but single files it can).
Its either that, or try to work out how dvd files work better and make them all in 1 chapter. (but files are huge then :()
Hope you guys can help, thx.
Edit: Oh ya, forgot to say that i have the full version that allows more than 5 mins of converting.
Nothing yet lol.

Ripping is just the process of getting the DVD files off the disc and on your hard drive. Converting to other formats is encoding.

all guys, thanks for your intest in my topic
Today I bring a topic on how to convert DVDs or other Videos to your iPod mp4
No.1 If you already have dvd ripper, please follow this way:
1. Please download iPod Movie Converter at http://www.imtoo.com/downloads/ipod-movie-converter.exe and install it.
2.Please run ImTOO DVD Ripper. Load your DVD into the program. For more details about this job, please read the instruction for DVD Ripper. After it is loaded, please select AVI as output format. We recommend AVI as output format because it is more stable and the ripping speed is always faster than mpeg format.
3.And then, please open “Output Settings” in the “Settings” menu. You must select a codec for AVI output. You’d better select XviD codec, from which you can get better output quality and smaller file size. If you have no XviD codec on your PC, please download it from http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec. It is free.
4.After you click “OK”, the program will return to the main interface. Now please just click “Encode” button to start ripping your DVD. If you do not want to get whole DVD ripped, you can just rip a chapter or a clip of DVD by the certain items in the “File” menu. And the output files will be found in the “Output Folder” you select.
5.It will take half of the duration time to rip whole DVD. After the ripping process is done, please run ImTOO iPod Movie Converter and load the output AVI file into the program. Highlight your file in the program, and select “Profile” and “Destination” for it. The output file will be found in the “Destination” folder you set. And “C:\Temp” will be the default one.
6. There are four options in the “Profile” box; one is for iPod audio format (MP3); the other three options are for video outputs in different quality.
Generally speaking, we recommend the default setting, “iPod Video Format”, which will produce medium quality in proper size.
Actually, while you select different output option, the settings will be modified automatically.
7. After you decide everything, please just click “Encode” to start the conversion to iPod format.
( ** If you just want to convert your video formats, such as DivX, MPEG, AVI etc to iPod MP4, you only need to download ImTOO iPod Movie Converter to help you.)
And, if you don't have a dvd ripper, please use DVD to iPod Converter directly to fulfill you needs on DVD to mp4 conversion. Please see the below guide about it.

This document shows how to rip and convert DVDs or other videos to your iPod MP4 with one converter super easily and fast beyond your imagination.
1. First of all, please download ImTOO DVD to iPod Converter at http://www.imtoo.com/downloads/dvd-to-ipod-converter.exe
2. Install it and open your local DVD by clicking "Add DVD Folder" button under "File" menu.
3. Click “Show Chapters” button to see all the chapters within the file.
4. Set output format: In “Profile” drop down list box, you may select output format. The software allows setting different output formats according to different files.
Tips: by selecting iPod MPEG-4 Movie format (*.mp4) in “Profile” drop down list box, the software will produce iPod mp4 formats.
5. Set conversion mode (Optional)
After selecting certain output format, the right column will show its general standard. By clicking certain settings such as 'Zoom', 'Split', 'Destination' and ‘Title’ etc, you may set it.
Please note: you can set "Bit Rate" by choosing the rate given, such as "512". Certainly, you can keep all the above options default without any change.
6. Start conversion:
Finally, selected the chapter you want to convert and start conversion by right-clicking the chapter name and selecting ‘Rip Selected’ under the menu.
After a short time you will get a file that is ready to be played on your iPod. But how do you add it to your iPod? Here is the way:
1. Please click ‘Open’ button after the conversion is completed.
2. Find the converted file in the destination folder and pull it to your iTunes.
If you don’t have an iTunes yet, please download it freely here:
3. Pull the file list under the iTunes to your iPod. Then you will see the file name under ‘Recently Added’ list of your iPod menus.
Finally, you are able to enjoy your beloved movies on your iPod breezely.

HOW TO Rip DVD To iPod Using Free SoftwareDownload Handbrake.
Insert a DVD of your choice. If DVD Player opens, quit it.
Run Handbrake. Select Detected volume, as shown in Figure 1.
**Here for Handbrake, http://handbrake.m0k.org/
Figure 1. Selecting the video source in Handbrake
Click Open. Handbrake will detect all the titles on the DVD. If you’re ripping a movie, just select the longest title in the list. If you’re ripping a TV show or something with multiple episodes on one disc, then select the episode you want, as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 2. Selecting a title
In the Destination section, set File Format to MP4 file, as shown in Figure 3.
Figure 3. Selecting the proper file format
Set Codecs to MPEG-4 Video / AAC Audio, as shown in Figure 4.
Figure 4. Selecting the proper codec
Note: A previous version of this guide suggested using the “AVC/H.264 Video” codec, but that does not work because the video iPod can not play the H.264 files that Handbrake produces. I have first-hand reports that the MPEG-4 Video codec works correctly. As an added bonus, MPEG-4 encoding is much faster.
For File, enter the full pathname where you want to save your movie, as shown in Figure 5.
Figure 5. Setting the output filename
In the Video section, set Quality to Average bitrate and enter 400. This can be as high as 768, but unless you squint you probably won’t see much difference. Higher bitrate = higher quality video = larger file size.
Figure 6. Setting the video quality
Optional - Under Quality, select 2-pass encoding, as shown in Figure 7. This takes twice as long to encode, but it improves the video quality and doesn’t make the file any larger.
Figure 7. Enabling 2-pass encoding
In the Audio section, for Language 1, select the audio track in your preferred language, as shown in Figure 8. Given the choice between MPEG and LPCM, choose MPEG.
Figure 8. Setting the primary language
The Sample rate is entirely up to you. Higher sample rate = higher quality audio = larger file size. The video iPod is compatible with any of the sample rates supported by Handbrake.
Figure 9. Setting the audio sample rate
For bitrate, you can keep the default of 128, or select a rate up to 160. Higher rate = higher audio quality = larger file size.
Figure 10. Setting the audio bitrate
Click Picture Settings. In the Picture Settings dialog, decrease Width until either it reads 320. Handbrake will auto-adjust the height to match. For a full-screen movie, the height will end up at 240; for wide-screen movies, it will be lower.
Figure 11. Resizing the movie
Close the Picture Settings dialog and click Rip. Encoding time depends on the speed of your Mac, the length of the movie, and whether you selected 2-pass encoding. Handbrake will display a progress bar, as shown in Figure 12.
Figure 12. Encoding progressWhen encoding is finished, quit Handbrake.
Run iTunes. Find the .mp4 file that Handbrake created and drag it into your iTunes library, or select Add to Library… from the File menu and select the encoded movie.

Hello all guys, so much happy to see your words here! I visited the author's site of ImTOO DVD to iPod Converter and found that it has been upgraded: there are 2 newly added optimized output formats for iPod 30G/60G players. Thus it is much easier and more convenient to use now. And I have improved my guide also. Here is the new link of the guide for the iPod converter within this forum: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/301744
I recommend you can try the new version instead of the former one at http://www.imtoo.com/downloads/dvd-to-ipod-converter.exe :》
