I am not able to get Nero to read from my harddrive any faster than about 2.9x (DVD-speed). (That's about 5MB/sec, right?) I have done the harddrive read speed test (in Nero) and there it claims a read speed of ... er 100MB or so, if I remember correctly. (It was loads more than what it seems capable of using anyway.) Why won't Nero read the HD (while burning) any faster than 3x?

I have some DVD+RWs which should cope with 4x, and Nero says they should too, but if I try burning at 4x I keep getting buffer underruns. It doesn't tell me about the underruns in words, but I can see the buffer level indicators periodically reach 0, and it creates faulty DVDs...

The same happens with some DVD+Rs which should cope with 16x. Still won't read faster than 2.9x or so.

I have also had two different DVD-writers, and the problem was there for both of them, so it's most likely Nero or the harddrive that is the problem. The harddrive, btw, is a 7200 rpm IDE, not SATA, but still...

    Any ideas?

I guess you'll want my log file. I'll post it when I get home.

Should I post the full log or just some parts?

Post the full log for 1 burn, just edit out your serial number.

    Hmm.

    Maybe I'm just imagining it?

I just did a full burn from of a Linux ISO to an empty 16x DVD-R @ 16x, and it came out clean. No read errors when testing the disc with CDCheck. It started burning at about 5x, and got up to about 14x at the end. Much better than ever before, I think.

The read speed still is a bit of a mystery though. When doing the 'speed test' it got up to about 30x a couple of hours ago. The simulation, though, only got up to about 7x. Now when I do the same thing, the speed test only gets up to 2.9x again - the way I thought it always had been... Strange... (It starts of at ~25x, for about 0.5 secs, and then plummets to a constant 2.9 or so.)

Seems ArnieBear hasn't gotten around to it yet, so you'll have to make due w/ me.

Your Firmware is out of date, current version is 1.03. And your Nero is really out of date, current version is 6.6.0.18. When you go to update Nero just DL packets 1&2.

    I've never seen that before.

This might help, not sure though:

    http://www.burstcopy.com/dma/xp/

You shouldn't be multi-tasking, turn off all running apps via task manager when you are burning.

You really shouldn't be burning that fast. No higher than 8x even when your using good media, and you are.
