I already know that it's Securom 2.8 but when I backed it up with CloneCD it installed OK but wouldn't play. I did have Amplify Weak Sectors on. My CD-RW drive is:

    Philips CDRW1610A_X_X_X_X_X_[small]Trevelyan: For England James?
    Bond: No, for me.

Some burners that are capable by theirselves to correct EFM (also known as "2-sheep burners")do not need 'Bypass EFM errors' (Alcohol 120%) or 'Amplify Weak Sectors' (CloneCD) be switched on. There is a very good article by Hitman, on CloneCD Forum, about that. Read the full article here:
    http://clone.cd/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=583

Quote (extracted from the article above):
    --------------------------------------------------------
Bypass EFM Error is intended for those you can't produce a working SD2 backup on their own due to their hardware (CDRW drive). If you can't produce a SD2 backup on your own, then you should leave this option enabled.

If you can make a working SD2 backup, meaning that you have a burner that can do correct EFM-Encoding of regular bit-patterns, then you should disable this option, because while leaving it enabled may still produce a working backup, leaving it enabled also notibably increases the chances of you making a coaster.

Leaving it enabled with a 2-sheep burner will not help you in any way shape or form...it will only hurt you.

Sorry, I got the type of protection wrong. It's actually Safedisk 2.8 Is the procedure any different?

I already assumed it was Safedisc 2.8 (if you notice, I wrote SD2 not SR2).

Sim CITY 4 won't play in your DVD/CD-ROM? If the game won't play in your DVD/CD-Rom or burner, you need to "hide-cd-r", or block ATIP. You can use Alcohol 120%, go to emulation and just tick all (for now). Now insert the backup in your BURNER and the game should install.

In my previous post (now I edited it) I forgot to tell that Alcohol's 'Bypass EFM errors' = CloneCD's 'Amplify Weak Sectors'. That should be disabled on '2-sheep' burners and enabled otherwise.

So, if shoeys method does not work with the first CD you burned, you might try to disable the 'Amplify Weak Sectors' option, before burning a new copy.

OK, last night I got as far as creating an image with Alcohol 120%. When it was reading the disc it was generating read errors (and going slowly), but once the read errors ended (they were at the beggining) it sped up and gave no more read errors. Is that normal?

This is normal when backing up Safedisc because the cd protection lies mainly right at the beginning of the cd. When using Alcohol, click customize>Safedisc 2.0 profile and be sure "fast error skip" is ticked. This allows you to read the image more quickly. If you don't have the option to "enhance, or amplify weak sectors" using Alcohol20% in the burn process, then you'll need to use BlindWrite 4.25 to burn the image simply because your Philips cdrw= 1 sheep burner. I don't drink "green beer", lol.

Are you sure it's a 1 sheep burner? When I tried Amplifying weak sectors (bypass EFM errors) it made a coaster.

    A) Yes, go to this thread and look at CloneCD supported writers>Philips. Your model is a "1 sheep buner"= writes regular bit patterns ALMOST correctly.
After you burn the image using "enhance, or amplify weak sectors", be sure Alcohol 120 is running in system tray then rick click the red Alcohol icon and go to emulation options and tick them all and play the backup in your Philips.

    CloneCD supported writers: http://elby.ch/english/products/clone_cd/writers/p.html#philips
Look at "Correct EFM Encoding". Your Philips CDRW1610 is a 1 sheep burner and I'm counting sheep, lol. The A at the end stands for ATAPI(IDE).

My advice: If you backup games on a routine basis, then get a MemorexMAX52x (rebagged LiteON) or a LiteON LTR 52x

So would that be able to copy all copy protections (given the right software)?

Also can it write pw/pq subchannel data?

Safedisc 2.8.x= Yes, but you'll need either emulation or software to play your backup (hide cd-r)
SecuROM: Some 1 sheep burners backup SecuROM 4.8.3, some don't. This is a matter of trial and error. if you have the cash, grab a MemorexMAX52x and your all good to go.

Pound for pound, the LiteON LTR 52246S is the best drive (at present) for making backups of pc/audio protection. See the link below for hardware tests. £50= How much is this in USA dollars?
