Playback problems with DVD+R DL

    Hello. I have been burning movies with the DVD writer drive that came with my Dell desktop onto sony single layer (4.5 gig) DVD+Rs for a while and they have all played fine on my Denon 2910 dvd player. But I just upgraded to a Pioneer dual layer burner and began burning movies to DVD+R DL discs. Three of the five will not play in my Denon player, they freeze up as soon as they begin to play. I've tried two brands of discs, Verbatim and Memorex and the same result. The weird thing is that I tested one of the movies that wouldn't play on my expensive Denon player at my mom's house on a cheap JVC from 1998 and it worked fine!--The same dvd player that had trouble playing burned CD-Rs. It makes no sense to me and am very frustrated. Does anyone have any suggestions. Am ripping with DVD Decrypter and burning with Nero 6.6.

    What speed are you burning at? With DLs you really shouldn't be burning any faster than 2.4x. Anyways, could I have a Nero log? It is usually in Programfiles\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory. I will only need 1 log, which ever one that failed. The logs are separated by this thing:

    ====== *** NeroAPI, History File *** ======

    And remember to edit out your serial number, it's at the top of every log and usually start w/ 1A2 or something.

    I'm using 2.4x dvds (both the Memorex and Verbatim). And now, instead of burning with Nero, I've tried with DVD Shrink--and 1 movie burned fine with the Memorex, but I tried with the Verbatim and it wont accept the disc. It seems to start working and then the disc pops out and it says:

    "The disc is not writable. Please insert a writable disc. Media requested: DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL.
    Media detected: DVD+R DL."

    As you can see, that makes no sense. It's saying that DVD+R DL is requested and DVD+R DL is detected, but that it's not writable.

    This whole thing is strange and annoying. If I had known how problematic and tricky burning and playing DL was, I would have never bought the burner and spent all this money on the damn discs. And there doesn't seem to be a straightforward solution. If so, I would really appreciate hearing it. Thanks again for the help.

    Shrink doesn't have a burning software. What you are doing is burning w/ NEro, you just have a box ticked. It's this one:

    But if you are using a DL disc then why bother w/ Shrink? Just make a 1 to 1 copy. That's probably you problem.

    I've burned straight through Nero as well with the same result. Some dvds play and some don't.

    None of it really makes any sense to me, it's all totally random. A dual layer dvd that won't play on a $700 dvd player that's less than a year old and supposedly compatible with all formats, but it will play on a cheap player that's 7 years old. I've just about given up.

    If you use DL then I recomment using DVDDcrypter, it's better suited to write to DLs. And again I ask why use shrink if you have a DL.

    I used shrink because that's what I was used to using with my old burner and 4.75 gig dvds. I'm still new to all of this and that's what I was comfortable with. I understand now that I don't need to use it with DL dvds and that it uses Nero anyway. But I'm having the same problem when I use Nero straight up.

    I guess I will give DVD Decrypter a try but am skeptical that it will make a difference. Don't you have to rip the movie as an ISO file to burn with Decrypter? And aren't ISO dvds less compatible with stand alone dvd players? I've never used ISO files before and don't know much about them. Thanks.
