Now this is so upseting!!! I have a LG DVDRAM and Ive been trying to back up a DVD movie to TDK DVDR (1-8x) and each time i get PMA update failure. Previously I used Platinum DVDR (8x) with no problem at all and also Creation DVDR (8x) with some losses when copying movies. However in the case of TDK DVDR discs it is even worse. I have Windows XP and nero version 6.6.0.18. I have not updated the firmware, since someone told me that it may destroy the drive definitevely (I dont know whether this is true if you update the drive using the correct firmware update) Please if anyone can help, it would be much appreciated. hi, PMA Update failure is usually just indicative of other problems, not a problem in itself; also it certainly sounds like you're in crap media overload there. not many varieties of TDK discs are much good... and the other discs you mention certainly don't sound very brand name to me.. i've teleported this thread to the Nero forum for you... ...let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar. You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"
Hi! Ive just posted the log for you I know you havent heard of Platinum brand for DVDR discs. This is surprising. I expected the TDK to be more reliable... But it seems to me like a deterioration of the drive since all Platinum discs were burned successfully, then the Creation (with some losses) and finally the TDK (Ive already wasted 6 with no success). Thanks a lot! P.S. What do you mean by saying crap media? Ive also done defragmentation of all my hard discs and also disc clean up and scanning to make sure that the performance of the data transfer is not influenced. I dont know whether we talk of the same thing. Im not really too advanced in to DVD burning thats and Im trying by myself to solve the problem. Thanks again for looking in to it.
no worries.. blank disc quality is one of THE most important aspects of DVD burning.. here's the logfile results - - your burner's firmware is ancient, ie a whacking great TEN versions behind; firmware is what teaches your burner about media (your blank discs) and burn speeds. A117 is here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1841 - these will be the TDK discs then (TTG02). see here for some info - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/253003 - update the firmware. if you still have problems, try better quality discs, see my signature for names of decent media.. - PMA Update failure is usually just indicative of other problems, not a problem in itself
Thank you so much!! I was planning to do a firmware update with A117 for my burner but i wasnt sure about that. I had also found the same link you posted. Thank you very much for confirming that for me! I'll do that and if the problem remains I'll come back for some more advice!! Take care
Im afraid that even after the drive (firmware) update with A117 retrieved from the link you posted, I still get the same error. Could not perform Disc at once PMA update failure. The burner works with normal CD-R discs and successfully burns data. With the TDK DVD-R 1-8X (4.7Gb) constantly fails to burn anything! It seems that is certainly, in my opinion, the TDK DVDrs. Bummer! Any other advice... except from buying other brands and stay away from TDKs??? I was thinking to use Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden DVD-R (8X). What is your opinion on Taiyo Yuden discs? And another thing.. Ive been told to use DVD -R (minus) instead of +. The Platinum DVDR I used and had no losses whatsoever, were +R. How do you explain this? I highly recommend genuine Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (made in japan) -- these are my top 3 choices of media. I don't know about you, but I don't think TDK is as superior as TY, Verbs and Maxell (Hitachi - made in japan) in my opinion. So, give them top notch media a try and hopefully you'll have a successfully burned next time. Keep us posted.
Problem solved! After the firmware update I tested the burner again using the same TDK DVDR media. The result was a failed process once again. Ive decided to upgrade my Nero to 7.0.12 version. And FINALLY, Ive burned so far 2 TDK DVDR with no problems at all at low speed 4x... If I knew the problem was the software to begin with... I would have no losses! Thanks guys for all the help! Really appreciated. P.S. Of course next time the media Im going to use will be Maxell, Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden. Not TDK!
Hi, If you have a NVidia based chipset in the motherboard (mine is NForce2), removing the NVidia SM bus driver may solve the problem. Of course the solution presented above is much better. But this can work for those who can´t/don´t want to update the DVD burning software. At this point I don´t know the side effects of removing this driver. Up to now my system seems stable. I had the exact same problem with virtually the same equipment - LGE DVD RAM Writer GSA-5120D, NVidia GxForce drivers & Nero 6.6 & after updating the firmware & changing drivers, the problem persists. I've got to believe that the problem lies with the "Fujifilm" disks that I'm using as crap is too nice a word for this garbage. Fuji is definitely a 4 letter word with me & I'm shocked that they would destroy their reputation by putting such a shoddy product on the market. Over the years I've burned 500+ CD's & maybe 150 DVD's with less than 5 disks that did not take for some reason. On my current pack of 100, it's 38 worked, 21 fails & 41 to go. [bold]Avoid Fuji disks like the plague.[/bold] My current pack of 50 CD's (Memorex) is 32 worked, zero fails. [bold]EDIT[/bold] - I subsequently found a number of blank Memorex disks & as I was making 4 copies of a DVD, set up Nero to burn 4 copies with the Fujicrap as the 3rd disk. The 1st 2 disks burned with no problems, the 3rd failed crashing Nero. I burned the remaining Memorex disk & then used 3 Fujicrap disks to finally get my last copy. It's definitely the disk quality that causes this problem.
