Disk protection to one side, is there any advantage to bringing files directly from a DVD using Recode as opposed to ripping with Decrypter then importing to Recode.
To my understanding Recode cannot even open a copy protected disc. I don't normally use Recode but the few times I have, I couldn't start with it if the disc was protected. So in that lies the obvious benefit.
Using Recode to rip/encode and then burn is just as if you would use Shrink by itself, only faster. You can also just rip/encode and save your files to HDD to burn later, or use another program. The only reason I used Decrypter to rip before was that I did not have AnyDVD, now I just use Recode for the most part.
@arniebear That would have been my question. So you can start with Recode if using AnyDVD in the background?
Yes, you use it just as you would Shrink. Just open and choose what you want, the whole disk, main movie or remake a DVD and just go. As long as AnyDVD is running Recode sees the disk as unprotected. Also use AnyDVD for protected CD's and Nero just backs them up to. Got to love that AnyDVD.
I do love AnyDVD (now)...I'm just waiting on another $10 disco, and it will be mine. I guess I need to break down and install Nero7 on my desktop. I just don't get that warm fuzzy feeling with it that I get with DVD Shrink.
Yeah, Shrink is like that old shirt you just can't give up. I bought Nero 7 but uninstalled it and went back to 6, the new version was not giving me a warm fuzzy feeling, so I will stick with 6 awhile longer until I feel that 7 is up to par.
attar, The answer to your question is YES, if you have a decryptor that runs in the background, like Anydvd (or) dvd43. You will save the extra step of having to use dvd decrytor first. --------- Locoeng & arniebear - its funny that you all had the "convo" you did. I too used to be an avid shrink user (still use it sometimes) - OLD HABITS DIE HARD. Shrink is a great program and always will be - but I really like Nero Recode - and funny thing is, I had it for quite a while and just never really knew how mych my nero program could do *L* Reading some posts from other members a while back, made me take a deeper look into my nero program and I couldnt believe all the "stuff" it did that I had been using two and three different OTHER programs to do *LOL*. Like you Loeoeng, by time I was able to test Anydvd - I was lucky enough to be right on time for the discount, and I have not looked back since *L* And like arniebear, I am happy with the nero 6 - BUT - I am waiting for the kinks of the upgrade to 7 be worked out, and when they are, I will be wanting to upgrade my nero next. I really do like the Anydvd & Nero combo. (PS) Locoeng, in my opinion, Recode picture quality is better than Shrink.
I've got Nero 7 on my laptop and DVD Shrink. I normally use Nero just to kinda get the feel for it. I do most of my backups on my desktop and primarily use DVD Shrink. I just never got around to installing it, I kinda procrastinate a bit. Speaking of bugs...I've backed up probably around 30-50 titles on my laptop with nero 7 and haven't had any problems with it...yet.
If you use Nero to recode, what do you play the DVD on? Are there DVD players that play these? Seems like this would limit who can watch the DVD.I have this program but I don't see its advantages.Can someone open my eyes to what I'm missing?
You use Nero Recode just as you would DVD Shrink it does the same thing, and is by the same developer. It is just faster and I think better than Shrink. It will rip and transcode and burn, as long as you use AnyDVD or DVD43 in the background to break the protection. If not you rip to HDD with a ripping program then open Recode and transcode and burn. It plays on all standalone players just like any other burned DVD.

If you are using +R blanks and are able to booktype, you should be able to play on almost any set top player.
For the ripping process, I will always bow down to DVD Decrypter (it still rips like a charm 95% - 99% on new release "if you know how to use it"). For encoding/transcoding (especially it produces great quality pictures), I'll have to go with Nero Recode 2.
Question Arniebear, I also have Nero 6 and love it, especially my recode, but you can save time by using Recode and AnyDVD and do a burn at once and save 15 minutes of ripping right? Meaning you don't have to rip with DVD Decryptor first to the hard drive and then recode. But is the quality as good with burn at once? I do use burn at once after I rip with DVD Decryptor and use recode for encoding and I have great quality. Just a thought. Strat
I bought Nero Digital Pro (on line) as a stand alone buy, then added it to the OEM version of Nero Express 6 which came on a support disk with one of my burners (don't remember which one at the moment). It Worked perfectly, and the Digital Pro program actually updated my year old Express 6 program for me for free.. Nice folks those Nero people! Anyway, this was about 8 months ago and I have not used Shrink since. Not that there is anything wrong with Shrink (Pro and Shrink were written by the same person) but Nero Digital is much faster and produces higher quality compression. Now, having said that, even though Nero Digital supports a direct read system, (with anyDVD running) I would not recommend skipping the [bold] Copy Entire Disk to Hard Drive [/bold] step. You just never know what copy processes you might want to play around with later, and reading the primary copy disk over and over and over again is VERY slow, and it just doesn't make sense. Use AnyDVD or DVD Decrypter (or a combination of both) to get that entire disk ON YOUR DRIVE, then play with the content to your hearts content. Both Nero Digital and Shrink support HD reads, and doing it that way saves bunches of time (IF) you decide to play with the video material later; and I almost always do. I have tried doing the copy process in [bold] every way [/bold] the different compression programs will support, but I always come back to the (copy to HD First) method. It's a fail safe procedure that just can NOT be topped. - Mike -
@fatstrat You can do it the way you described it is time saving and I do not notice that much difference in quality. I will use Recode with AnyDVD and just do the whole process it is definitely one click. I only will rip with Decrypter now if I do not plan on doing the movie at that time, just save on my HDD for when I can sit down and do several backups at a time. Recode is definitely a finely tuned program, I have been using it regularly for a year now and have no faults with it. You can even change the AEC/quality enhancements in it just like Shrink to Max Sharp/Smooth/MaxSmooth just like Shrink if you go into your regedit. The default is Sharp just like Shrink.

@fatstrat We think alike, LOL. I guess great minds does think alike. Yep, DVD Decrypter and DVDFab Decrypter are FREE, plus there's other ways like VobBlanker and PgcEdit combo with PSL2 Plugins with DVD Decrypter.
LOCOENG,you mentioned in replying to my thread about using DVD+,I have been using DVD-,am I asking for trouble using the DVD- ? When I purchase a movie I have been making a back up of it,but I only copy the main movie. Also,I'm not familiar with "booktype",could you point me in the direction of some information about this.Thank you,your help is much appreciated.
