Taking MPEG files off of your hard drive and copying to disk

I am at a lost of how to take MPEG files stored on my hard drive and converting them so they can be burned to either a DVD or a VCD. Can someone give me some good beginners advice?

Look on the net for a program called easy VCD. If the mpeg files are mpeg 1 then you can use easy vcd to make VCD's if they are mpeg 2 then you can make SVCD's (super vcd's).
Making DVD's from them is a little more complex how long are they?

Thanks for attempting to help me! The files run about 15 minutes each I am not sure if this is what you needed. About the Easy VCD program, I downloaded it but when I tried to use it my DVD burner the Sony DRU 500a was not listed as compatible with the program. Is there any other wat to do it?

Crowds, I looked up the files and they are anywhere from 13-15 MB ASF. files that are playable on my Real One player so they are set up with the Real One icon on my hard drive. Knowing this, how can I convert them to VCD's?

Ok ive never worked with asf files, sorry. But ive done some searching for you and apparently you can use tmpg enc to convert them to the format you would need to make SVCD or DVD. have a look here

As you have a sony DRU 500a i would say you should try and make them into a DVD. You may or may not be able to play them back on your stanalone player, youll have to check if it will by doing a web search. Once you have re-encoded the files (tmpg enc will give you the option for the output file you need for dvd compliant or S/VCD if you use the wizard). I use maestro to compile my own DVD's but that requires me to have my files demuxed into both its video and audio streams (longwinded) There are programs like Videowave that are more straight forward and user freindly but they all cost £$£$£$.
I dont know why you cant get easy vcd to work with the sony. Do you have a normal CD burner on your computer? If so burn it with that. You can also use Nero to make S/VCD's.
It should be worth noting that if your making VCD or SVCD's you should use CDR/RW media and not DVD-+R/RW.

I currently trying to do the same thing, also using a Sony DRU500.
Progress so far:
Currently trying Nero Vision express Full latest version with the MPEG-2 and DVD plugins.
Nero Vision express will accept the MPEG 1 files and will then transcode them, and burn them to DVD. as i write this post the disk is burning on my other pc so i dont no how compatible the DVD will be until later today when it finishes!!!
The other WAy using Nero is:
MPEG-1. Convert to an audio file and an Mv2 file by using the TMPGenc (latest version) DVD wizard. It will load up the MPEG file and spurt out the two files i mentioned above.
Once you have these files you need to author them. I have been using Dazzle DVD complete to author, but Dazzle dosent burn them in a very compatable format, so once authored ive been going back to nero.
Open a new UDF DVD Rom 1.02 project in nero(see DVDrhelp.com for the correct procedure's and why you have to do it this way), load up the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders and burn them.
Again, im in the process of doing this as we speak so i dont no how effective the results will be yet, but in principle i think it should work, if nothing else hopefully it will give you a starting point.
Ill post again with the results

Working MPEG to DVD copy that plays on my pioneer set top DVD player.
Software:
Windows XP Proffesional, NeroVision Express full version (comes with Nero Burning Rom 5.5 full version), with the DVD and MPEG 2 Plugins that you have to buy seperately. Download the Nero Update and the Nerovision update from www.nero.com.
I also have the bundled software that came with the DVD burner drive installed on my system, but did not use it for this purpose.
Hardware:
Sony DRU-500a installed on the second IDE channel on its own, as the master drive. (aparently this does make a difference!)
Via control panel, system, hardare, in windows make sure you disable DMA (direct memory access) for the burner drive.
Media:
Bulkpaq unbranded DVD-R bought from www.span.com
Basically open up Nerovision express and follow the prompts, it allows you to load the MPEG 1 files from your hard drive, you can create chapters and a basic menu and change the text font and colour etc.
So far tested on a Pioneer DVD-454 set top DVD player, sony CD rom drive in my computer and the dvd drive in my Dell laptop.
Will test on my XBOX and a couple of other types of player later today, and i will post the results.
