Hi, I put sticky labels on all my old backups and it turns out they are bad Now I want to backup all my backups onto printable face DVDs but alot of them wont copy due to IO errors. Even when I remove the label using vodka I still get the IO errors. Sometimes I can bypass them by clicking on retry until eventually it can read it. I have tried the discs in 2 DVD drives. Any ideas? Thanks.
Vodka??? Warm water (and just enough to saturate the label) should do the trick... BTW, what media did you originally back these up using? I ask because I made the same mistake with my first 50 or so back-ups (using Stomper Labels). I just laid the discs label side down in a plate with water for 15 or so minutes. After that, the label peeled right off and they ripped beautifully. These were all done on TY and Verb media. They played fine, but they scanned horrendously, and some of them couldn't be read back at high speed (for ripping). I used good media and bad practices. Hopefully, you didn't use bad media AND bad practices. I only use TY inkjet printables now... Lesson learned... Good luck...
I used Bulkpaq orange and some blue ones. The blue ones copy ok but some of the bulkpaq ones dont. Im copying onto dataon DVDs with printable faces. I really dont have the money to buy ritek discs etc. These dataon seem fine for now.
You should really consider better quality. The bargain stuff may seem like a deal now, but it won't when you have to back them up yet again... TY printables can be had for 46 cents a disc after shipping from supermediastore... I don't know what you paid for the Dataon and Bulkpaq, but I bet if you add the two purchases together, it is more expensive than the TY's... Not to even mention the time involved in burning these movies twice, AND possibly even a third time a few months down the road. Cut some grass, skip a meal or two, panhandle, but PLEASE get the good stuff the first time. LOL Seriously, though, quality media is a much better investment. I haven't used Ritek, but TY or Verb won't let you down....

You believed that those labels were fine, since they "seemed fine for now." While some users reported that "my discs with sticky labels play fine, so I'm gonna keep using them," others warned of the future consequences when the discs suddenly would begin to no longer play, and in many cases could not even be re-ripped. You were one of those that used labels, perhaps with knowledge of these warnings, or perhaps without it. Now, you are being urged to stick to high quality media by others here. I would urge you to consider this advice carefully. Like the labels, one of the consequences of using second-class blank DVDs or third-class blank DVDs is that these discs will often play fine after a burn, but six months later, they choke. Or, perhaps after 9 months, they are useless. Or, after a year, they cannot even be recognized by a standalone player or a PC DVD-Rom Drive. This has been widely reported, and some of the lesser quality DVDs are even famous for this symptom (Ritek GO5s are one example of a disc that it usually fine for the first couple of months, but later they suddenly turn into 100% coasters; CMC is another such brand with the same reputation). I promise you are not saving money at all if those discs are suddenly filler for the garbage heap, and you have to start all over. With all due respect, these are just my thoughts, I now use Taiyo Yuden printables or Verbatim (the ones made by Mitsubishi Chemicals). I usually pay between 42 and 47 cents per blank disc, after shipping. Sometimes, with a good sale, even less (I recently paid only 39 cents per printable Taiyo Yuden). This is in the United States.
