Ever since I got my new system, Nero has given me trouble burning Data DVDs. The problem that I'm having is that the burn process just hangs during the lead-in. The DVD-drive will repeatedly spin up and down for the next 15 - 25 minutes in a ~4 second cycle, then the burn process will fail. However, no data is written to the disc, and I can immediately turn around and burn onto it again. This is not a consistant problem, hit and miss with about a 60% failure rate. I noticed this with Nero 6.6.0.16, and thought that I'd try 7.0.12 (demo), but that didn't fix the problem either (clean OS install). Anyone got some thoughts? (Burner is an LG GSA-4163)

The only thing I can see is dma is off for the burner and should be on.

You might want to try burning at 4x instead of 8x

You also might want to check for conflicts with existing drivers that you removed from the log before posting it.

I didn't remove the drivers, none are there when an error occurs. As for DMA Mode, I tried turning it on (setting the secondary IDE controller to "DMA if possible", but it's still use PIO).

Here's a cut from a successful burn. Even those aren't showing the drivers:

That is odd. I can not see deferance in the one that failed and the one that didnt.

Can you tell me what this device is from the log?
DiskPeripheral : ST3160827AS nvatabus Port 3 ID 0 DMA: Off

See Time index 01:38:44 in the first log. That's where the difference is.

As for the "ST3160827AS nvatabus Port 3 ID 0 DMA: Off"; Seagate Barracudda 7200.8 SATA 160GB HDD. Stored on this disk are OS files (triple boot). The data being burned is on the Maxtor 160GB drive (for this particular instance). This error has occured burning from each of the three disk drives though.

I thought it was a sata hdd but wanted to be sure. Have you checked to see if there is controler update for it?

About the difference that is what I meant. I see no difference in settings from one to the other Same media and all. So one error out and other not is odd. I have heard of problems with nvida drivers and nero. Is that what the controler runs drivers from nvida?

Yes, controller is nVidia. Motherboard is DFI LanParty UT SLI-D, running off the nForce 4 SLI Chipset. Originally I did install the IDE SW drivers, but changed the IDE controller back to the Microsoft ones. Left the SATA controller on the nVidia drivers though.

I'm trying a new install on a second partition today. I didn't install the nVidia SW drivers on that one at all (nor have I installed any other software besides basic windows & motherboard drivers). Once graphics drivers are installed, I'll try putting Nero on next, and see if I have the same error or not.

That will be a good test. Should point to if is something from the nvida drivers or not. Keep us posted on the outcome.

Those nvatabus drivers are a pain for getting DMA sorted. there's a few threads with ths solution, will have to dig around, but i think the girst is to remove the Nvidia drivers and use standard Microsoft ones.

Did an install on a new partition, skipping the IDE SW drivers, and it seems to be working for now. Need to burn a lot of stuff off my system to clear some room, so I'll see how that goes, but it looks probmising so far.

However, I do have one problem with not putting on those drivers as Microsoft is only listing IDE controllers in my deveice manager, rather than SATA controllers on which my OS driver is attached. AS well, I am planning on eventually getting a RAID setup going (once I have money for new HDDs), and I'll need to use the NV drivers then. Is this a known problem with Nero, and are Ahead/Nero aware and working on a solution for it?
