    Can it not? From http://support.ap.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/p53101/en/intro.htm:

In any event, I've burned DVD+Rs in the past with this drive....

About the memory....I shut all programs down and monitored taskmanager while burning - the only thing taking up any memory was system idle process. No clue why the log showed so little free. Anything it could be? Any more info I could give to help?

    Many thanks...

Firmware seems to be up to date, but I doubt it's the latest -- rpc forum doesn't have any updates since April 2004, here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1681 So, I think you should check with Ricoh or Philips for any latest available firmware.
With only 13MB left, you're in a super tough situation here. My usual recommendation is to upgrade/add another 512MB to boost up your CPU. To free up more memory, try this: go to START, RUN and type msconfig, click on STARTUP and disable any unnecessary startup/running programs. Another way is "ctrl+alt+del" and click on Processes, then "End Process" on any programs/applications that you don't really needed in prior to burning.

This should have a 3 lines, yep.... firmware is too old to read the media's mid code. Try to search for any available firmware on the net. It should read like the below, taken from a log of mine:

Recorder: SONY DVD RW DRU-710A, Media type: DVD+R
Disc Manufacturer ID: MCC, Media Type ID: 004, Product revision number: 0
Disc Application Code: 0, Extended Information Indicators: 7

Your burner doesn't like the media you're using. Try other high quality media like genuine Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim "Advanced Azo" and Maxell (Hitachi - made in japan).

Something is not right while your burner is trying to read the blank media. See above replies for high quality media and try get your firmware update if there is any available.

Try to burn at 4X -- that's the best, safest and most recommended speeds.

Dell support says it writes DVD's at 2X.
The Nero log says it's writing at 2.4X.
I presume that because the drive does not recognize the media, Nero is deciding that 2.4X is ok.
Are 2X and 2.4X considered to be the same?

    Thanks for the thoughts....

Seems my problem is A) bad support for my burner (last firmware update is almost 2 years old) and B) crap media - although I've burned 3/3 discs in another burner with no problems. Is my burner just incompatible with these discs? Anything I can do? I'd be happy even if I was turning out 50% coasters, but these discs won't even start to burn....

Disc info from DVDIdentifier if it helps:

Don't know why it's still showing so much memory in use....absolutely no other programs are running...

    Thanks...

    - firmware is up to date - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1681 however it was last updated in Apr 2004, so the firmware is not equipped to recognise all newer media, certainly not the media you're trying to use at the moment.

    - DMA needs to be ON, fix via this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

    - you need to close down more programs prior to ALL dvd work/burning to free up more memory

    - the burner can't recognise that disc properly, here's an example (not the best example as it's CMC discs which are landfill but it's an example) of what it should look like -
    - ie when the firmware is up to date you will see a 3line paragraph such as in my example. So basically your firmware appears to have been left behind by the manufacturer, which happens sometimes when new drives are produced
