honestly, there isn't anything they can do.. it's kinda hard to check for the firmware through live without downloading something to specifically check your cd drive and then send the diagnostics information back. on top of that.. if people are illegally downloading video games and burning them to play on 360.. why would they cheat themselves out of 50 bucks a year for live access if they aren't even getting the 60 for the game? ;) 50 bucks may not be much.. but ms knows hundreds upon thousands are modding the boxes.. they wont ban people for firmware.. as it would hurt them even more.

You know I use to copy games and download games for the PS2. But I have to say I may have contibuted to the high price of games. I just dont see why we as consumers should keep this up.
Its only hurting us in the long run. Since getting the 360 at launch, I have been VERY selective of the games I purchase. So far im very happy and dont mind paying for good games.
Now on the other hand I do hate having to pay for extra content. As a matter of fact, I dont. Console games dont stick around long enough to warrant paying for extra content.

Turns out the reason it wasnt working was because .net framework 2 wasnt installed on my pc
Anyone having the same problem with not being able to run ss merger
Download:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en
Then just run the .exe file
Install
And voila! ss merger should now be running

@ghex
yeah i know ;P my two cents. hehe
and josh.. yeah .net framework needs to be installed, didn't know you'd get that error prompt without it though.. just thought you wouldn't be able to connect and check for the correct md5 number... which some people are still having trouble with. I still can't get it to work even with .framework 2 and SQL 2005.. i'm getting the over-a-paragraph-error-about-connection-sql-crap. :P oh well, blindly selecting the SS hasn't produced a coaster for me yet.

Hello:
Very interesting tutorial.
I have a couple of questions related to it:
1st: How do you know if the DVD image is already patched. Using the patcher?
2nd: More like a proposal: Could you post a list of working Burners+Media Discs.
Would an LG work with Verbatim?
Thanks.

The easiest way to tell if you game is pre-pathced is to check the nfo that came with the game (thats assuming youve downloaded it)
And a solid burner is a Pioneer 11D you can pick one of these up for about £10
And the most reliable media is Verbatim+r DVD DL

if it didn't come with an NFO the next thing to check would be..after all the files are done extracting.. is there a .dvd file with the lot? if not.. chances are it isn't patched. the next thing you could do is load it to SS merger 1.7 and if it doesn't pop up saying there's already an SS applied then you know for sure it isn't patched.

That tells me that they can't update it thru XBox live and can never update it or disable the hack.
What they actually do is ban your console for Xbox Live, powned.
At least thats what these guys say:
http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEuZyyVFyprcUrLDTt.php
Look for the following:
Can Microsoft detect it via Xbox LIVE? They probably can ... and when they start checking they will probably act like with the Xbox1, ban your Xbox 360 console serial for life from the LIVE servers ... or maybe even more, who knows what they are planning. You've been warned!
P.D. What about the LG-Hitachi?
I guess the only thing they can do is add the updates to new retail games which I'm not even sure they can do since we had to connect it to PC to edit it, wouldn't they have too also? If you could edit the firmware via the 360 putting the xtreme firmware on there wouldnt have been so hard for us eh?
All speculation and just me making an educated guess. I figure if they could fix it, they would have already.

Ok, I was speculating if using the same ss.bin patcher I could find out. Or if there is a program to do it. Will have to Google it.
Are there Specific Images for Specific Drives?
I know this firmware (Xtreme)is for The Toshiba-Samsung drive only:
http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEuZyyVFyprcUrLDTt.php
>And a solid burner is a Pioneer 11D you can pick one of these up for >about £10
According to these guys:
http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEuZyyVFyprcUrLDTt.php
As long as the burner supports DVD book as a DVD media ROM, you're good to go.
>And the most reliable media is Verbatim+r DVD DL
They are quite expensive here($9), but yes It has been the best media I have ever, and I mean Ever worked with, from CDs to anything else.

¿Do you think they'll detect the copy or the flashed drive. If I use my originals to connect would it still render problems?

lol and no, common sense should tell you if they try and change sectors on the disc for better protection. it would HAVE to be compatible with all types of drives.. but thats 360's mistake.. they're different types of drives in each xbox. and it would also have to be compatible with each type of drives firmware.. so changing the 360's discs information for better protection is a bust.
oh and think about this for a moment...
if mcosoft connected to your xbox to check for firmware.. think about your rights for a moment. you're allowed to store music/movies <self made>/pictures and just about anything private on your xbox. in order for microsoft to connect to your xbox 360 to check for anything implemented by the user <outside of live arcade features> instituted by the EULA users agreement.. they would NEED your permission.. or at least your consent. much like a search warrant. ;) some of you may think "deh oh well thats the hard drive" darr, my point is that they would have access to it, not that they would look at it.. and would still need your consent. so most likely... <which i can bet money on it..> (yes more speculation ghex.. but i love you anyway) any form of banishment from firmware will come as a death-from-downloaded content or patch.
yeah that was alot, thanks for reading that mindless crap :D

it's highly unlikely that MS would purposely render a 360 useless due to fw (or anyother reason)...they'd simple ban your 360 from connecting to XBL...just like they've done w/ Xbox 1 if you've upgraded your hdd, ran a hacked bios, etc :)

So lets say They require you to update your dashboard in order to connect to xbox live. Then the ban could be triggered.
Would it still work even though I only use original disks?

@ this point it's all speculation if/when ban will happen and the dynamics surrounding it. Most likely it'll just be a "switch" that MS flips to ban all boxes w/ hacked f/w. If you have orig disks and are using hacked f/w, it doesn't matter, it's a hacked f/w regardless :)
I'm of the opinion that they can detect it w/ all the code is in the dash right now (they may have added some code in the latest rounds of dash updates, but then again, it's all speculation) We'll all know when/if they start banning boxes. Honestly, I'm surprised that if they can detect it right now that they haven't started banning boxes.
Again, I highly doubt MS would purposely brick a 360 because they detected hacked f/w, they'd just not allow your box to connect to XBL. But, again, this is all speculation.

well the thing about firmware though is it isn't against the agreement, nor is it illegal.. right? and what i'm having a hard time trying to understand though is why they decided to make the drives harder to crack before banning those who, and setting an example, of all the firmware users if it is against the agreement.
maybe with all the stealth patches mcosoft is having a hard time telling if the discs are legit or backedup.. and then again, it is legal to make your own backups.. just not downloaded w/o previous ownership
and as far as homebrew.. you need firmware to play it/add it.. right? and as far as i understand homebrew was fair game..
someone correct me if im wrong

Legally, it comes down to the laws in your country...also, MS has the right to manage XBL as they feel fit (it is their product)...
The firmware hack WILL NOT allow for running unsigned code (read homebrew). The basic security of the 360 hasn't been broken and can't run homebrew yet. Once it's broken you can plan on MS dropping the banhammer because people will be able to cheat on XBL by modifying game content.
